Can't you mail in a winning ticket and they mail a check back? In person might be required for a large prize, but I would hope $1,600 is below that threshold.

You were just unlucky. If the probability of a ticket winning something is 1 in 4, the probability of all 13 tickets losing is 0.75^13 = 0.023757, or 2.4%, or 1 in 42.

1 in 42 is a fairly low chance but not that awful.

4 $5 tickets = nothing

5 $2 tickets = nothing

Total Loss $90

Winner: state of Florida

No proof only a suspicion holiday scratchers have the worst odds of winning.

I've used to purchase a scratcher or 2 from any state I was visiting and then saved them for stocking stuffers at Christmas. However... the kids complained when one won 1,600$ from a state not convenient to get to and they were frustrated with me that I was MAKING them go to that state to cash it in.

Now? I give them Dunkin' Donuts gift cards in their stockings and save the scratchers from traveling for me.

When I lived in Vermont, I gave my three kids $40 each in $2 scratchers. It was a game to see who won the most. If anyone won the top prize of a few thousand, I wouldn't expect anything. It's a gift! One won slightly more than $40 and the other two won less than $40, but I knew that with 20 tickets, it's hard to win zero, and I was right.

It's the thought that counts and some people would rather get scratch-offs than fruit cake. It's not a bad idea for Christmas parties when you have no idea who will get the gift you bring.

Scratch-offs won't replace a Red Ryder BB gun and I never read where someone shot out their eye opening scratch-offs. But that's another Christmas Story.

No, I have not seen that commercial. I am usually not watching those types of shows that would advertise scratchers. Commercials usually go over the top with their storyline.

That is a wonderful ideal. I would hate to get mom a few and then her not win nothing on them and if there is a big winner then I can save that one for me even tho she would spilt it with me.

I scratch off the bar code at bottom, to find a winner. Then I give the WINNING card to family members so they can scratch the rest of the ticket off to see how much they won.

Better than disappointing with a loser.

Oh sure I give scratchers as stocking stuffers, if family spends Christmas. In fact,for the last 6 years I buy the spouse a book of $2 scratchers that we open the night before. She has always given me half of them to scratch... Just some simple fun and enjoyment..I have gotten them as gifts at Company Christmas parties.. If someone that I buy for wins big ? good for them, its their gift and I truly hope they enjoy it.

You're in California too, have you seen the commercial where the young woman gives them to everyone in her apartment building? She's got a stack of 50 envelopes and is stuffing them all with $10 scratchers. Just a teensy bit hard to believe.

It came on during my show so I thought I would ask my LP family what they thought.

I received a Scratcher from a family member and I won $50.00 It was considered a gift by both parties. Nothing was expected.

I do not buy Scratchers and I do not give them as gifts either.

Yes once my girlfriend at the time gave me some amount of scratchers. First one I scratched off had $20. Rest of them had nothing. I felt bad because she spent the money. I m not sure if I would give money say if it was jackpot or something. That s like indian giving . I might though. But Giving money doesn t really work like that when you re talking friends and such. It s considered a gift legally. Which is why loan sharks have to use violence to get paid.

This time of year you might have seen the corny lottery commercials where people give their family scratchers as stocking stuffers. I always thought this was sort of a joke because I can't imagine anyone I know doing this, but now I wonder, do people actually give scratchers as gifts? Have you ever received one as a holiday gift? What happens if the scratcher wins a significant amount, would the giver try to get a cut? Or do you think it's like making a charitable donation in someone's name, exc... [ More ]
