Would you join a lottery pool consisting solely of family members?

Unbeknownst to me I apparently joined just such a pool the moment I began playing. The other members grudgingly admit if they win big they too would share, but I'm the one they're betting on sans actual cash. Could be an interesting conversation, how many others simply assume they will share in any big win that comes your way?

I always thought immediate family was family by blood not marriage.

It can still be a big number though. When I was growing up there was a family down the street that had 18 kids. Yes 18. No twins or triplets that I know of. No adoptions. One set of parents. All well behaved, very polite, no trouble makers.

One would hope that any court would realize that a person who did not participate in the pool was not entitled to anything from the win, regardless of the legal definition you've employed.

Aside from that, the legal definition you quote is framed in Family Law dealing with benefits and entitlements setting the legal requirements for who might contest a will or why an adopted child is entitled to child support. Immediate Family=Someone's spouse, parents and grandparents, children and grand children, brothers and sisters, mother-in-law and father-in-law, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, daughters-in-law and sons-in-law. Adopted, half, and step members are also included in immediate family.

It's just me and my brother, so I would say yes.

As for others, as long as you make copies of the tickets and have a written and notarized contract detailing the distribution of winnings, I see no problem with that. It would be treated like any other pool between non-family members.

This topic came up over the weekend at a friend's home. His wife seemed to be leading the charge on getting this show on the road. Which got me thinking: How would you respond if that talk was raised amongst your immediate Family members?

Would you join,or pass on it?
