A bonus ball(s) is an additional ball drawn from the same hopper as the others, providing additional chances to win lowering the odds of winning some of the prizes.

Power/Mega balls are drawn from a different hopper and makes some of the prizes harder to win.

Considering Power Ball drew numbered balls from two containers for over 30 years now, it's sort of weird that two drawings in one needs explaining. A payout chart clearly shows the added value placed on matching the bonus number. Matching less than two numbers without matching the bonus number pays nothing.

what is the disadvantage of the bonus ball?

Any game with a bonus ball is two games in one.

You have to get all the main draw numbers and the bonus ball correct to win the jackpot.

Yes, you win a minimal amount with just the bonus ball.

And you win an amount for all the main numbers.

But you can't win the jackpot without all the main numbers as well as the bonus ball.

The disadvantage is having to win two games instead of one.
