There was no cheating going on.

What happened was exactly what I was promoting on this thread. The best way to win the Texas lottery was to get a lottery club going and buy lots of tickets.

Someone took my advice and did exactly that. I just wish they had invited me to join their club.

I agree with rundown99 on this one. Have tried this before. Had 63 people playing with me. With that many people no one trusts anyone. We got a lawyer. They took in all the tickets matched the winner for a hefty fee. After all was said and done each person only got 9800 after taxes and lawyer fees. No one was really happy with it as we all made about the same working in the oil fields.

When I sold lottery last year most people just asked for whatever drawing it was that night. A few would specify cash option, and if someone didn't I as. If memory serves only one or two wanted annuity and those had a playslip. Can't recall anyone asking for annuity.

For the life of me I don't recall if a QP button or annuity button had to be pushed if the player didn't have a playslip. Next time I buy tix I'll have to ask.

Way back when Texas was an annuity only game there was no option.

Initially sold as an annuity-only game (no cash option), the purchaser having to pick numbers, and the drawings held only on Saturdays, Lotto Texas later added the Quick Pick option (random selection of numbers, added on May 29, 1993, the Lottery's first anniversary), the Cash Value option (CVO) in 1997, and changed the drawings to twice weekly, adding Wednesdays. (Powerball started the CVO November 2, 1997)

You can't pick annuity if you buy QP. Most winners are QP player thats why you don't see annuity among winning tickets. Personally, I always pick annuity when I buy Texas lotto. I want to win for a peaceful life for the rest of my life, not to hassle with money managers. Winners will get more than 2 million per year for next 30 years and is enough for a good life for anyone.

I was simply repeating the advertised value. It is the same value as reported in all the ads and the list of worldwide lotteries provided on this site by Todd.

It makes it easier to use a consistent reporting value. That does not imply or infer I was advocating taking the annuity.

Almost everyone advocates for taking the cash payout. And for a lottery pool, it would be extremely foolish to take the annuity.

I wouldn't do it.

Unless you know people that know a fair system. Rather a lottery pool, I would do the stock market, I resell items.

Someone at an estate sale asked me about any lucky lottery numbers and I said there is a way you need to watch the numbers carefully. Play at your own risk.

It would be too hard to get a group of pool players to agree to taking the annuity unless they are all family about the same age.

Pool players are in a pool because they want to get the money and be done with it. And they want immediate control of their share.

When lotteries began $1 million plus lotto games, there was no choice and most of the jackpots were paid by yearly payments. Not very many players could retire on twenty pretax payments of $50,000. Spitting it among 10 players is exactly life changing either.

With odds of 1 in 25,000 of winning the jackpot, it is a great opportunity (assuming 10 people in the pool and each contributes $100).

They advertise that annuity to make the jackpot look bigger than it really is, like MM and PB do also. No winner has taken the annuity that I can recall. The cash amount is the REAL jackpot. If a winner was to take the annuity the cash amount is invested to pay the annuity.

Not worth joining a pool. Its $61 million IF the winner opts for the annuity.

Otherwise it is $36.9 million, before taxes. Take a third right off the top for taxes.

That leaves a bit over $24.6 million to split between the pool.

So 10 pool players would net about $2.46 million each with more taxes due at the end of the year.

Big difference between expecting $61 million, or $36.9 million and receiving 2.4 million.

But that's the reality.

I was in a 30 person Ohio Super Lotto pool and each player paid $5 a drawing. The pool was set up so the money was split between a pool where each player picked 6 numbers and the first player or players to match their numbers won that pool and the second pool was buying QPs. When the jackpot reached a certain high, 75% went into the jackpot pool and the rest into the player pick pool. The 4 out of 6 matches wins went back into the QP pool, but we were very disappointed when we finally won $1500

I disagree. Everyone who buys a ticket wants to win. Some people spend hundreds of hours working out various strategies in the hope their odds of winning may improve. If they had any idea how much their odds improve buy joining a group, they would clearly join a group.

There are two kinds of lottery players.

1. Those that do not understand probabilities and therefore do not join a group.

2. Those that understand probabilities and join a group.

Lotto Texas looks like a great candidate for a lotto pool. The expected value for the game is well above the 50% average and may be close to 100%.

The odds are reasonable enough that with a large number of tickets, winning the jackpot is a realistic goal.

Yeah a written operating agreement is crucial for a big pool, whether they are strangers or family. No reason why you can't insist on rules with kin. Gotta have rules for buy-in amt and frequency, what to do if someone misses a payment, whether to distribute or reinvest smaller wins, whether QPs are okay with everyone or not. Given a choice of joining a lotto pool with a group of strangers or a group of friends and family, I will always take the strangers.

With friends and family, pools tend to be informal. There is always the cousin who asks to be looked after if the pool wins even though they never contribute. And then someone says, don't worry .
