legal articles on a law firm's website is a search engine optimization tactic. when a potential client googles legal info, they want their law firm's website to get the click. it doesn't mean the law firm is bad or good, it just means they rely on search engine traffic to get clients. which usually means they don't have a lot of name recognition in their region, maybe because they are new or they operate in a saturated market.

It's a fair point that many law firms don't represent a lot of big lottery winners. Some law firms aren't interested in accepting a big winning lottery client simply because the revenue stream for them to represent big winners is weak. Those firms will most likely refer out a potential client to another firm. They also understand that they won't get a lot of referrals to their law firm from previous big lottery winners.

I think some of you are seriously underestimating the cost of an attorney at a medium.or large sized law firm.

Two, if any attorney wants to create a team, you can approve or not approve the people and check them out in advance. Thinking you only nod yes to any team, even if dealing with different attorneys, will get you in trouble fast. Something else I should have put in the post above. The lawyers website I read didn't have very much info regarding their fee to create and load a revocable living trust, they simply provided a general estimate .

I read a lot the comments that were posted along with the video too. Just like any video on YouTube, some comments were ridiculous, but some were definitely worth reading. There are over 1,300 comments attached to the video and I did not read all of them.

If I lived in a non anonymous state like California, I would still very minimally check with a lottery attorney to see if I missed anything even if I was 99.9 % certain of the answer.

After that, yea just a tax attorney and financial expert. I would bring them with me to claim just to take the photo focus off of one person. But I am overly cautious.

Looking for an attorney with a generic name is Absolutely Not a way to select an attorney. People are computer savvy and could easily track down the correct Jane Smith attorney. Any attorney who represents lottery winners is going to get calls asking for money for a while but there is no need to respond to the calls so that is not an issue for attorney selection.

State income tax applies to the state in which you live at the time you gain constructive receipt or the economic benefit of the money. Unless the ticket is from a state you don't live in, in which case that state gets their income tax before your home state gets a crack at it.

There are points for him in my opinion based on his having interacted with lottery officials if it is a fairly routine and likely resolvable issue. Panouses mentioned about people calling him before they win for free advice. It is no different than asking a contractor for a little free work in your home.

I doubt there are more than a handful of experienced lottery attorneys and ones who are familiar with all the personalities in various state lottery offices.

One could always hire a big city firm but it would likely cost far more. I doubt an associate would be assigned to a $ billion win so you are going to pay $1000 plus per hour... [ More ]

if you call a work injury lawyer before you've been injured on the job, they will give you some general information, but will tell you to call back when you've actually been injured on the job. and you are far more likely to be injured at work than win a huge jackpot requiring specialty legal services. people contacting panouses's office before they've won are wasting their own time and other people's time.

I watched that BW channel mentioned earlier and more Panouses videos. He mentions if a client calls with a win on a Monday, he can usually claim it by Friday for around 20 k. Sounds very reasonable. He also mentions his fees and other attorney fees are NOT a percentage of the winnings (only personal injury attorneys take 30% in cases). I really hope this sinks in for LP members who incorrectly think the attorney takes a percentage of your winnings.

Yeah, I wouldn't have him do anything except figure out how to claim anonymously. For any win over 5 million after tax, I'd find a wealth management company to invest the money.

Exactly. Investigate and research and if the answer is no, then that is it. You would owe more than a few hundred dollars. I am sure his rate is likely 4 to $500 per hour at a minimum. Research and phone calls and meetings take time and if he has to travel to meet with lottery officials, that is all billable time.

In the video I watched, this guy gave a couple examples of how he was able to find a way for his client to claim anonymously in states that were not anonymous. In one state he said he studied the wording of the law and worked with the state Attorney General who agreed with his interpretation. I guess I'd have to get a signed agreement that he can do that in Idaho, and if not, I owe him only a few hundred bucks for his time investigating it.

I would keep those functions/people separate after an initial period.

I would allow this lottery attorney to help me claim a huge win, meet with lottery officials if necessary, help me determine what brokerage firm to deposit my win, set up a charitable entity that I controlled, and handle my tax return for that year.

I used to drive to Oregon when Idaho first bundled the multiplier for my convenience. I used that as my protest for about a year and a half, then got tired of the hour drive over there and an hour back. Montana and Wyoming are too far to drive. if you win big and don't know the first thing about hiring a lawyer, go to your state's bar association website and search for lawyers that specialize in trusts or something like that. these sites usually have some kind of 'find a lawyer' tool.

I agree but he is not an accident insurances or class action attorney, so other attorneys DO NOT take a percentage of your win. It is considered unethical as well per the rules of conduct. I am not sure why people continue to think this is how it works.

He will either give you an estimated flat fee based on the estimated number of hours of work involved or an hourly rate. The amount of the win is meaningless.

As happens so often, I think this is another case of players somehow failing to understand that the point of a lottery is to raise revenue for the entity that runs the lottery.

Actually having two games and letting the players pick may be worse right now.

That just leads to having a limited pool of player cash going to more games which leads to slower rolls and more player fatigue.

The lottery market needs to sort itself out and cull the games that don't pull in much player dollars.

There is a lot more player calculus that goes on than he seems to consider. Would I buy a Powerball ticket for a measly $20 million? No! Would I buy a Michigan 47 ticket for a $20 million jackpot? Yes! I was recently in the Fantasy 5 here for a 'measly' $650,000

Remember that the lifespan calculation was likely based on actuarial tables. If you are 80 and try this argument, even if your parents and grandparents lived to be 100 plus, you are likely out of luck with this argument.

1. A state only allowed anonymous claiming for $10 million plus wins and the jp was under that amount.

2. A young guy in his 20s decided to take the yearly annuity of 350k.

That guy probably won Lucky for Life which paid $365,000 per year for life. So if a young person wins, and lives to 95yo, they end up getting a larger total sum of money than the person who dies before 20 years is up. LfL paid a minimum of 20 years, so if you die it's paid into your estate only until the minimum 20 payments have been made. I believe the new Millionaire for Life which took the place of LfL has a similar payout plan.

Why would expected lifespan matter, when lotto is capped to a certain number of years? 20 or 30, for all lottos that I've seen. Unclaimed years go to the estate or can be left to someone in a will. The lottery is paying out for the same number of years regardless of how young the recipient is.

Any person in any profession can cheat you. If one is so stupid as to turn over the management of millions of dollars to anyone and you not have access, you are part of the problem. A stupid person will always be taken advantage of at some point.

I thought well of Kurland based on public info but I would have immediately seen the red flags once I met with him. No amount of research would have shown red flags prior to meeting with him.
