Todd: One reason NJ Pick-6 Lotto is doing well is that the neighboring New York Lotto (6/51) continues to gyp players by returning only 40% of sales as prizes. A 3-of-6 match wins a FREE PLAY (overall game odds 1 in 60.) Three numbers and the bonus (Aug. 1) paid just $8.50 ! (The Michigan 6/51 and Ohio 6/49 pay better in the upper tiers than NY.) The NY Take Five (5/39) DOES return 50%, but is not a jackpot game. The members of the NY state legislature probably don't buy many lottery tickets.... [ More ]

Actually, New Jersey's Pick 6 is doing quite well. It serves up some decent-sized jackpots (starting at $2 million), and it's last format change was great. (Got rid of the awful bonus number - those familiar with it will know what I mean.) They offer some good lower-tier prizes too.I think the Pick 6 benefits from the fact that NJ has a good-sized population with lots of everyday lottery players that can support larger jackpots. Meanwhile, the state and player pool is small enough that the Pic... [ More ]

A few years ago Ohio had a 6/47 lotto game which paid $3 if you matched 3 numbers. Your odds of getting something back was 1:48. They had winners from Indiana, Pennsyvania, Kentucky and one from Washington D.C.,a navy guy who was visiting family. The point is a lot of people from other states liked Ohio's game. But then they improved their game, for a while regardless of the jackpot size, one ticket could only win $20M, then they added 2 more numbers, then they said nobody wanted to be bother wi... [ More ]

Last year California replaced its regular lotto with a Powerball/Big Game style format. Lotto Georgia and Lotto Kentucky are being dumped, with Lotto Virginia serving all three states beginning next month. Colorado is expected to alter or eliminate its Lotto now that it's a Powerball state. The struggling new Michigan Millions may morph into still another multi-state game. Are single-state six-number jackpot lotto games on their way to extinction
