I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics and I know that the odds of winning the powerball are 1 out of 80,000,000, meaning that you have a greater chance of being struck by lightning or getting into a fatal car accident while driving to buy the lottery ticket than winning the jackpot.

yeah this is fun. but you people need to know what you are talking about first before you talk out of your butt. ill agree if you buy 1 chance you have 1 chance out of a possible 135,000,000. ill also agree if you buy 2 chances you have 2 chances you have 2 chances out of a possible 135,000,000. plain and simple the odds are staggering. This is fun. Ok, let's forget about odds. Let's just say that if you buy one mega million tickets you have 1 chance that you will be correct, and 135,145,919 chances that you will be wrong. If you buy 2 tickets you will have 2 chances that you will be correct, and 135,145,918 chances you will be wrong, etc....

maybe you lay off the crack. i never said 3 would decrease the odds to 1:250,000. i said buying 2 tickets out of 1,000,000 makes your odds 1:500,000. maybe i should use smaller numbers so all you people can understand. Thats the correct conclusion.I see why this point missed by lotto players since they don't buy the same number combination twice for the same draw. Why would they, lol.If however you just simply allow the lotto terminal to generate two tickets, a la quick pick , then the second ticket *could* come up as the same combination.If the game has odds of 1 in 1,000,000 that means, on the average, 999,999 times out of 1,000,000 you will lose. Your odds of winning the game would not be 1:1 unless you purchased all 1,000,000 possible combinations which would be 1,000,000:1,000,000 which reduces to 1:1 odds.RJOh

Dude you may want to lay off the peace pipe. 2 tickets do not reduce your odds to 1 in 500,000. Cause under that logic 3 tickets would make it 1 in 250,000, 4 would be 1 in 125,000 and so forth. Basically after 15 or 20 tickets bought your odds would be 1 in 1 according to your theory.

The odds are 1,000,000:1 on each individual ticket. The odds stated on the back of the lottery tickets are the number of combinations. If you buy two tickets you have 2 chances in 1 million to win. You don't have 1 chance in 500,000. Because buying the extra ticket doesn't change the possible combinations. Who agrees or disagrees with me

You were in the other thread about this subject. You are confusing odds with combinations. If you check the odds of matching 3 without matching the bonus ball the odds are 1:245. There are 10 combinations of 3's in the winning combination of five, but there are 551,310 possible combinations of 5's which contain one of those combinations of 3's The odds of 1:245 is derived by reducing 551,310/135,145,920. I have never seen those odds expressed as 551,310:135,145,920.RJOh

One more time. If there are 1,000,000 possible combinations and you buy one ticket, your odds of winning is 1,000,000:1.If you buy two tickets your odds are 1,000,000:2, not 500,000:1, buying the second ticket did not make 500,000 possible combinations dissapper. There are still 999,998 possible combinations left.
