However, I live about an hour and a half from Missouri (a Powerball state); and Illinois (a MegaMillions state) is only another hour away. I just started playing the lottery, making a ticket-buying trip every seven weeks. Lotteries make no sense as gambling (the odds are way too low); but, if someone is giving away millions of dollars several times a week, it makes no sense not to buy a ticket. 1:135,145,920 is infinitely better odds than 0 -- a p... [ More ]

To clarify the record since NY now has MM I play each draw. Now, I go to Conn. to play Powerball when the jackpot is large. There are groups that play thousands and more dollars when the prizes of any lottery is high. Some of them come from other countries. They try to play as many combinations as their money allows thus they not only try to hit the jackpot but get each of the lessor prizes too. There was some spam calling for people to get in on the 105 million dollar prize that was just won.

I live in central Ohio and before we had the Megamillions game, I droved to Michigan to play the Biggame and to Indiana to play the Powerball. The round trip to Michigan was 3 hours and to Indiana 4 hours, but I alway had a $3 - $10 ticket to turn in, so I always returned when the jackpot got big. Now that Megamillion in Ohio, I don't travel to Michigan any more, but I got a $10 Powerball ticket to turn in, so if Powerball jackpot reaches $80M before the ticket expires, that will be a go... [ More ]

I'm like megamillionaire ; I live in a non MM/but we got Powerball state and I play PB every drawing regardless of the jackpot because any jackpot is golden to me and then I travel the 2 hour roundtrip to OH to play MM when the jackpot there gets pretty big(like around 60ish million). For me it's not worth the trip if the MM jackpot is small. I've got mileage on my car, gas in the tank, turnpike tolls and money for the drawing to think about. Besides, there's always Powerball.... [ More ]

I don't know megamillionaire, making a train ride for 4 million bucks seems worth it to me. I have my step-mother buy mine(10 draws at a time) because I live in a state that doesn't have mega-millions, so I buy regardless of what the pot is. . Most people feel that winning a jackpot more than once is too much to ask for. So if you are gonna win, I would rather win BIG. If I won 4 million of course I could make it last a lifetime. But if I won 200 million I could have that 7 million dollar house... [ More ]

To answer the original question, some people can't afford to play regularly and only play when the prizes are large. Others from states that don't have Mega Millions play when the prizes are large because it makes the travel worth while. Before NY got MM I only went to Jersey when the prize made it worth the train ride. Now I play like I play the regular NY lotto.
