Bryan: Actually, all 5 WHITE balls wins second prize regardless. The base second prize stays at $100,000 (assuming PowerPlay is not selected) UNLESS the jackpot is a PB record AND the jackpot is hit.

Hi Secret4777,The second prize is only awarded to players that hit all 5 white balls (what use to be 100,000) and only applies if the jackpot is hit and it was a record jackpot according to what I read awhile back.Later,Bryan

Secret, you are spelling out some of the reasons why it's important to take the cash option. There have been several other topics on Lottery Post discussing this issue, try using the Search feature to search on some key terms like annuity , heirs , taxes , etc.

You do not choose the PowerPlay number. If you exercise the PowerPlay option, you are guaranteed $6 if you match only the Powerball (starting next week) and have a 40% chance of winning $15 (5x). The second prize bonus will be when a jackpot is HIT after reaching a record jackpot level. The regular second prize applies (with or without PowerPlay) unless the jackpot is a Powerball record. Very few, if any, PB winners will want the annuity regardless of their life expectancy.

Todd: People do buy tickets for Powerball, MM, etc based on the jackpot more than anything else. I feel that if you don't win the jackpot, you need to win a decent smaller prize on occasion to stay loyal to the game. (Look at the $1 prize in NY Lotto, which is harder to win than the $2 and $3 prizes in MM PB. And NY Lotto has only five prize levels. CashONLY: I don't necessarily agree with your position that Powerball has better low-tier prizes. They are certainly different, but not better. You can say that technically, this prize is better than that, but the bottom line is that people play the game to win the jackpot, not $2 or $3.Powerball is attempting to increase the perceived size of its jackpot by raising the annuity period. Todd: I have no problem with lengthening the annuity, since all Powerball players don't have to worry about the choice unless they win. The extra four years will further discourage winners from taking the annual payments. As for leaving the lower-tier prizes as is, PB still pays better than MM if you win a small prize; often that money is put back into the game. Powerball will become a Pick 5 of 53 and Pick 1 of 42. The old game was Pick 5 of 49 and Pick 1 of 42. Power Play will have a minimum multiplier of 2 and maximum of 5. The old Power Play was 1 to 5.

It looks to me like they really scaled back changes to the game. I'm surprised they didn't make any changes to the lower-tier prizes, but it's probably because the odds of winning are approzimately the same.The worst thing they did is to lower the cash payout by increasing the annuity period to 30 years.
