Hi Secret4777,The second prize is only awarded to players that hit all 5 white balls (what use to be 100,000) and only applies if the jackpot is hit and it was a record jackpot according to what I read awhile back.Later,Bryan

Secret, you are spelling out some of the reasons why it's important to take the cash option. There have been several other topics on Lottery Post discussing this issue, try using the Search feature to search on some key terms like annuity , heirs , taxes , etc.

You do not choose the PowerPlay number. If you exercise the PowerPlay option, you are guaranteed $6 if you match only the Powerball (starting next week) and have a 40% chance of winning $15 (5x). The second prize bonus will be when a jackpot is HIT after reaching a record jackpot level. The regular second prize applies (with or without PowerPlay) unless the jackpot is a Powerball record. Very few, if any, PB winners will want the annuity regardless of their life expectancy.

On the powerball website, it says that among the new rules:Power Play Option Drops The 1 But if the power play multiplies your winnings if you get the power play number right, what is the point of paying an extra amount for power play 1 if any amount multiplied by 1 is that same amount anyway? Not only that but the New Match 5 feature is created where the prize pool is divided among those who match 5 numbers.

Todd: People do buy tickets for Powerball, MM, etc based on the jackpot more than anything else. I feel that if you don't win the jackpot, you need to win a decent smaller prize on occasion to stay loyal to the game. (Look at the $1 prize in NY Lotto, which is harder to win than the $2 and $3 prizes in MM PB. And NY Lotto has only five prize levels. How about the rapidly declining interest in the Georgia Change Game-three winners with no lower tier prizes. The Michigan game starting in two w... [ More ]

CashONLY: I don't necessarily agree with your position that Powerball has better low-tier prizes. They are certainly different, but not better. You can say that technically, this prize is better than that, but the bottom line is that people play the game to win the jackpot, not $2 or $3.Powerball is attempting to increase the perceived size of its jackpot by raising the annuity period. This has the direct effect of LOWERING the cash value. Mega Millions, on the other hand, always has a great... [ More ]

Cash: I knew you'd like the bonus, no matter how much you win it's CASH. No waiting 30 years. What do you think of them capping the rollover to 25 million when the prize gets big

Todd: I have no problem with lengthening the annuity, since all Powerball players don't have to worry about the choice unless they win. The extra four years will further discourage winners from taking the annual payments. As for leaving the lower-tier prizes as is, PB still pays better than MM if you win a small prize; often that money is put back into the game. Making 2x the smallest multiplier for the Power Play option also will help. I actually LIKE the bonus second prize, it allows non-jac... [ More ]

It looks to me like they really scaled back changes to the game. I'm surprised they didn't make any changes to the lower-tier prizes, but it's probably because the odds of winning are approzimately the same. The worst thing they did is to lower the cash payout by increasing the annuity period to 30 years.
