I'm retired, so I would have to start working on spending it all before I die rather than asking for a leave or giving a 2 week notice. All the churches in my community are doing fine, so getting money from a lottery winner is not going to make or break them. There are a lot of T.V. preachers asking for money, but they don't actually do anything in my area, so they don't count as part of my community. I have plenty of friends and relatives who think they can handle other people money better... [ More ]

DonnaH: I'm not sure how some Churches would react, I'm sure I could find a way to slip in the plate somehow... grin :) Being from the South myself, I have thought of the same question. Maybe start a Foundation to help certain ones??? Might be a solution. Ken,I too would like to give at least 10% to the church, but my question is, Will churches accept lottery money? I'd like to find out (smiling). Most of your lottery winners are in the $100,000 to 5 million range. There's more lottery games than just Powerball and Megamillions.

If there is a remote chance that I ever win a jackpot, my decisions would be based on the jackpot amount. With a huge sum, I'm leaning toward a trust where hopefully my name wouldn't be revealed or there could be a way to get around it. If the jackpot were much lower, I wouldn't get a trust. In any dvent, seeing financial advisors would be the route to go. I'd take early retirement when my kids are out high school, which is in one year. If i won, I'd still finish my undergrad and even persue an MBA. I think I'll even work til 30 then enjoy life. I wouldn't even want the whole jackpot. After paying taxes, I'd give 25% to family, 25% to friends, 10% to charity, invest 30% and splurge 10% on a new car, trips, etc.

there is a period of time (6-12 weeks on average) that you must wait before actually getting the money after you claim the winning ticket. (too bad they announce your name right away tho...)In an AT-WILL employment state (like PA), the same law that lets them shut down and run off to another state or country would work to YOUR advantage and you would not be sued for not giving 2 weeks notice.

Can you be sued for leaving without giving a two weeks notice after winning all that money??? Personally, I think that most people don't form trusts, because they don't want to work another day and to form a trust takes weeks. I would change my phone number first. Do you realize how many charity groups out there harp on lotto winners? Next thing I would do is put winning ticket in a SAFE place until redeemed. Then next thing I will do is get an Atourney, Too many in-law vuljers out there. One it is official that I am a winner and know when and how much I will collect; then I will put my two weeks notice in.

None of the above...I will take a leave of absence long enough to set up my financials ...trust fund, tax lawyer, etc. Then I would start looking for a property in the DC Metro area since my family wants to move back there (why, I don't know).Then back to some kind of work, if not the environmental work I do now, an average of 2.5 days a week. Then something else, maybe habitat for humanity. I already retired once and found out you have to do something.
