so why does my changed avatar not show up? I clicked the save new avatar button it said it saved it...... hmmm.... I also tried to edit a post once and it cut the entire message in half.. the top part being lost forever... what'd I do wrong

Just click Control Panel, then click Edit Avatar Settings. From there you can select your avatar from the list, or if you know of a picture somewhere on the internet, you can put the URL of the image in the space provided. There's a ton of avatars on this site in the list; I'd be surprised if there wasn't a cat. It'll take a while to go through the whole list.
