the cash option for mega millions is bigger than that of powerball because it takes more cash to get the same amount in 25 years than it does in 30.

Despite setting two roll records in a row, the Oct 9 Powerball draw did not set a new 15-roll record. The jackpot was $214.7 million and the record 15-roll jackpot is $221.5 milllion.The Mega Millions 15-roll record is $294 million which is also the largest Mega Millions jackpot on record.Good luck,Jake

If the jackpot is big enough, the area of sales will become larger, many of the winners of large jackpots are from out of the state of sale. When the jackpots are over $200M people are willing to drive farther or go on line to buy tickets to be in the game.RJOh

Mr. Doctor, you're right, sales are the determinant, not number of states...but for simplicity I doubled the sales, making the assumption that sales are proportionally aligned with the number of states, which is not necessarily true. And you can't double the number of states in Powerball....but the point is, if you double the population base (a better reference than states), you will see greater sales, no? Will sales be exactly double? Will they be lower/higher...difficult to say without dat... [ More ]

JAG331:You are quick to determine the rolls if the number of powerball states were doubled, but you are not taking into account that that will very likely not be the case because the jackpot is driven by sales, as well as the fact that th jackpot may reach a new record, but then the jackpots will be capped (not a good idea).

The number of states has no direct bearing on the odds of winning PB/MM, which I think is the main issue. There are what...26 or 27 states/districts in PB (this argument correlates to MM also). How large are the rollovers now? In the beginning, maybe $8 or 9 million each draw, right? As the jackpot rises to $100-$200 million we start seeing rollovers of $15 or 25 million, so the pot increases at a much faster rate.Now, for arguments sake, let's say we had twice as many states in one lottery.... I've been saying that megamillions was a poor game for quite a while now. They should have changed the game when they added Texas instead its stuck in its usual low jackpot mode. I can only hope they finally fix the game.

the problem isn't hasn't been slow rolls. i've seen it roll pretty high pretty fast. the problem is that it's too populated for the jackpot prize. the jackpot gets hit too often. if you look back to the early stages of the game, you would notice that the jackpot has been hit within 3 draws of the previous hit at least 7 times. mega millions needs to expand the matrix to meet the huge population playing the game. they said they will only let one more state join in on the game because they do not... I always play Powerball on PlayLot.com myself. I find it much easier than driving 1-2 hours to a Powerball state. fja,I made the trip to Indiana Saturday for tickets and played 20 lines for three draws, but if there is a roll over this Wednesday the jackpot will grow to over $200M for Saturday, so I may make another trip. The trouble is friends who know I play when the jackpot gets big and hardly ever play themselves have asked me to pick-up a ticket for them and they'll pay me later but I try to avoid such situations because they alway turn ugly if there is a big winner in the group.
