five families----a very good mob book
The Mafia has long held a spot in the American imagination. Despite their earned reputation for brutality, the Mafia has been glorified in countless movies, books, and television shows. Not so in this book. Selwyn Raab makes no attempt to perpetuate myths about the Mafia; instead, he exposes them as a serious threat to honest citizens: "The collective goal of the five families of New York was the pillaging of the nation's richest city and region," he writes. These five families--Bonanno, Colo...

New Year's Eve Musings
I suppose I'm glad this year is over 'cause it's been hairy to say the least. I understand from Glynnis McCants it had something to do with my numbers and 2005 and I should have had popcorn and just watched it all like a movie and not tried to control anything at all. Same numbers turns out as 1969 which was another totally huge fiasco. So, I know I should be grateful etc.
A part of me wants to dress up tonight in this coat from the 30's. It was my Mom's and I o...

The Iliad
Morning blogsters:
Hope all of you are getting the cobwebs out of your punkin heads sufficiently to maximize whatever joy a person gets out of sitting around a Christmas tree unwrapping packages.
I overslept here, didn't wake until dawn. Maybe some of this Christmas spirit thing rubbed off on me and disrupted my routines. Nice morning. Quiet outside, cool, but not a shock to hit you when you climb out from under the covers or hit you in the face when you ven...

"What the CIA is willing to do to hurt the Bush adm"
On a more interesting note here at home, seems we may have a real problem within the CIA. I've considered it sufficiently important that I've contacted my senators asking for a congressional investigation .... and will do so again as many times as it takes to get it done.
When a nation has its president's own intelligence gathering agen...

"How We're Heading Back to the Future
I'm always the optimist who sees our current economic restructuring as positive making it ripe for entrepreneurs, visionaires who're willing to take a chance on themselves rather than bemoan changes which were set into motion 50 years ago.
How We're Heading Back to the Future...
