deadly abuse of methadone tops other prescription drugs
(Feb. 13) - Methadone, a painkiller that has been used to treat heroin addicts for decades, has emerged as an increasingly popular and deadly street drug, joining narcotics such as Vicodin and OxyContin as frequently abused prescription drugs.
Fatal overdoses of methadone rose at a higher rate than those involving any other narcotic from 1999 through 2004, according to a recent study by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The number of deaths from methadone in 2004 (...

"Hit Iran Where It Hurts
HIT IRAN WHERE IT HURTS
By DICK MORRIS EILEEN MCGANN
December 27, 2006 -- The sanctions adopted by the United Nations are too weak, too puny and too late to have any deterrent effect on Iran's drive to build a nuclear bomb. But there is something the U.S. government, state governments, labor unions, pension funds and each of us as individuals can do: We can stop investing in companies that help Iran exploit the oil and gas resources on which its economy...

nancy pelosi to become first woman to lead house
WASHINGTON (Nov. 8) - Nancy Pelosi spearheaded the Democratic takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, positioning herself to become the first woman to lead the chamber -- and President George W. Bush's worst political nightmare.
House Democratic leader since 2003, the California liberal framed the elections as a referendum on Bush, his unpopular Iraq war and the scandal-rocked, Republican-led House.
Today the American people voted for change and t...

time to go-inside the worst congress ever
There is very little that sums up the record of the U.S. Congress in the Bush years better than a half-mad boy-addict put in charge of a federal commission on child exploitation. After all, if a hairy-necked, raincoat-clad freak like Rep. Mark Foley can get himself named co-chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, one can only wonder: What the hell else is going on in the corridors of Capitol Hill these days?
These past six years were more than just the most shame...

high fuel prices don't dent love of gas guzzlers
As gas prices again approach $3 a gallon, consumers are buying new vehicles that are faster and heavier than ever, and less fuel-efficient than 20 years ago, the Environmental Protection Agency says in a new report.
The average fuel economy of new 2006 models was virtually flat with a year ago at 21 miles per gallon, according to the latest EPA report, despite the increasing deployment of technologies such as systems that shut off cylinders in V-8 engines and six-speed transmission...

"Medicaid Hurdle for Immigrants
This is something that should have happened 30 years ago. In the age of technology they should also have a thumbprinted photo ID so cards can't be borrowed or multiple ID's assumed to double dip from several states.
