This is correct. Lottery sales actually increase in poor economic conditions. It is a leading indicator of recession. People play when they get desperate mainly scratch tickets and a study in WA showed people spend more proportionately from unemployment checks vs paychecks adjusted for amount.

What matters is their profit margin. It really does seem like a lot of people just can't figure that out. After millions of people threw away $5 on the new game format, I wonder how many of them will come back for more punishment Most of them, I'd imagine.
