I can always tell people who do not have a dollar to their name or do not read anything beyond a headline. It is a Federal crime for an IRS employee to access any tax return without authorization, let alone release it outside of the IRS.
I would be taking legal action as well if it happened to me.

Florida and Claiming a Jackpot Anonymously
There's something fluky/crazy that I think is kind of interesting that could actually happen in Florida with a second place PowerBall win of either a million (or more) dollars.
In Florida, if you win more than $250,000 in any Florida lottery game, you can claim your winnings and remain anonymous, but only for six months! That's per Florida Statute 24.1051
On it's website, The Florida Lottery publishes a PDF file/report called Jackpot Winners Retailers Information .
If you win a jac

Powerball
Texas does appear to be easier not to mention cheaper than Florida to claim anonymously.
In Florida a player could utilize statue 1024.51 to claim anonymously and fore go using an attorney. That said, after 90 days the Florida Lottery would release the name of the winner to anyone that asks them. The Florida Lottery thinks 90 days is enough time for a winner to get a head start on doing a disappearing act. I dunno, I guess that all depends on the winners personal situation.
As for me, I

It might be worth it if I found someone who could figure out a way to claim it anonymously.
There will always be some minimum fee, but regardless of what type of advice you get or how good is it what justifies a fee that's 10 times the minimum if you were to win ten times as much? How about winning a billion? I'm just a tad skeptical that he'd have to do 10 times as much work. I expect that some of the supposed justification is doing ongoing work, but just how much do you want him to do bey

Are you playing Mega Millions with the $5.00 per play?
I do chuckle at the MM statement they put in their news release on 3/25/25:
The game will feature bigger prizes at every non-jackpot prize tier, better odds to win the jackpot, better odds overall, larger starting jackpots, and faster-growing jackpots. Starting at $50 Million didn't seem to energize much needed sales to support that claim. Let's see if the sticker shock of 150% increase wears off after a year or as one poster put it, they have a few runs that go for 30 drawings or more .

State income tax applies to the state in which you live at the time you gain constructive receipt or the economic benefit of the money. Unless the ticket is from a state you don't live in, in which case that state gets their income tax before your home state gets a crack at it.

Are you playing Mega Millions with the $5.00 per play?
We're surprised there was no fan fair press release or some news event about the one year anniversary of MM's change to:
The more expensive $5.00 per play wallet raiding,
Anticlimactic Non-Billion dollar jackpot winning,
Spectacular bigger odds than the jackpot, singular and only x10 on 5 + 0 events disappointing,
Unsurprising non-exciting $10 Million beginning draw, weeks long rollover jackpot choking,
Online Lottery game that has been my pleasure to never play.
