Set an affordable monthly budget of how much you're going to spend on scratchers and stick with it. That way you won't get sucked dry . Budget discipline is the key.

CA Lottery - California Love - CA Lottery Scratchers
Buying 20 WoF tickets was the worst $200 I've spent recently. My scratcher budget is nearly depleted.

How many scratch tickets do you buy at the store?

Starting next week, I am only going to buy $10 worth of instant tickets per week. I could get 10 $1 tix one week or 2 $5 or just one $10 ticket. Oh man, that is some crazy shizit: the GA meeting leader buying 3 rolls...WOW! I hope things work out better for you James. I just try to stick to a lottery entertainment budget, whatever is comfortable for you. For me I do without Cable TV, don't miss it at all. And do without Starbucks couple times each day. Don't miss that either. Together that money saved funds my lotto budget. Find something that works for you.

We are talking budget here and a budget seldom includes lottery at all. The overall feeling I get from the OP's post is that s/he is going to try the instants and is looking for advice on just how to do it right. There is no right but there is a way to do it. Research on the PA lotter
