online poll....will H.R. 411 become law?
Three bills aiming to "prohibit" Internet gambling are now winding their way through Congress.
Internet gambling is already prohibited, at least in most forms. The companies that operate casino, sports betting, and poker websites are all based offshore, and most of their executives risk arrest if they ever step foot on American soil.
But web-based gambling is still a $12 billion industry. And so just as has happened every other time our government has attempted to ban vice (see illicit dr

The estimated 390,000 illegal aliens in North Carolina are welcome to spend money on the state's new lottery, but they may not be allowed to collect.
Lottery officials said state law does not prohibit illegal aliens from collecting a prize, but the lottery's claim policies may effectively bar them from getting the money.
N.C. lottery rules require a winner of $600 or more to claim their prize at a lottery office, showing a photo identification and proof of a Social Security number. If the

According to N.C. constitution, games are a tax, former justice says
Just 10 days before the first scratch-off tickets go on sale in North Carolina, lawyers argued yesterday about whether legislators followed proper procedure when they adopted a state lottery last year, and they asked a judge to block the lottery's start March 30.
Ultimately, the decision could come down to whether the lottery is considered a tax.
Lottery opponents from both the left and the right filed suit last year a

N.C. lottery is quickly piling up a lot of dirty laundry
Editorial By Asheville Citizen-Times
published February 19, 2006
The North Carolina Lottery may bring extra money into state coffers, but the questionable ethics surrounding its inception and the controversies it continues to generate raise serious questions about whether the cost outweighs the value.
Last week two new conflicts presented themselves. The first confirms the worst suspicions of many lottery opponents and the fears of some lottery supporters. The second is a slap in the face

Updated with final jackpot amount and retailer location
By Todd Northrop
After a run of 29 drawings without a jackpot winner, the 30th drawing of the multi-state Mega Millions game produced a single $1.337 billion winner last night when one lottery ticket sold in Illinois matched all five numbers plus the Mega Ball.
It was the fourth time a lottery jackpot had grown to more than $1 billion, and the third time a single ticket won $1 billion or more.
The winner of the unimaginable

The Bermuda Government was advised more than two years ago that the sale of American lottery tickets on the island appeared to breach numerous laws in the United States, including some designed to stop money-laundering.

Senate Democrats kill Alabama lottery bill over dog track concerns
It was a step away from passage.
Then the lottery bill fell off a cliff.
Needing just one final vote to go on a future election ballot, a proposal to establish a statewide lottery collapsed in the Alabama Senate Friday when Democrats, key to the bill's success, withdrew their support amid concerns language in the bill or not taken up by the House of Representatives -- could give the Poarch Band of Creek Indians a gaming monopoly at the expense of the state's existing dog tracks.
