The states don't lose anything by adding a multi-state lottery, or an international one, if one should come along. The state collects their 50% right off the top, before putting a dime into the prize pool. The worst that happens is that the jackpot is won in another state, and the state doesn't collect any tax on the winnings. A tech bubble, a credit bubble, what next? A lottery bubble? I cant see why the individual states would want to ruin their lotteries further with all the money flowing out of state in those jackpots. They would be gambling with their own income via tax dollars. It could be years before anybody in their state won a jackpot and they would get to collect any taxes on it! Why would the states want that?? They are looking for a more steady stream of taxes.

I only play $1 each day on Cash 5. I usually win about 33% of what I play. You're right about the payout, it's not too good. That's why I only play a buck. It just doesn't pay out enough to play more than that, especially if you do win with someone else and end up splitting the jackpot.As recently as 2005 jackpots were $30,000 and more. but we had to drive to CA and on my way back we stopped at Arizona and New Mexico...Yah we went out of our way to buy PB tickets. I want to break the record of getting all the big jackpot....its a mission I have been working on for so long and I finally got a chance to drive to CA. Unforunately the powerball rules make this an almost impossibility. Once a new record high is reached the jackpot will only increase by a set amount per each drawing. I am not sure of the exact numbers, butthe new record(for Powerball) is around $390 million and then a set increase of about $20 million each drawing with the breakage being divvied up among the second tier winners.
