Elderly S.F. man loses $10,000 in lottery scam
Police are asking for the public's help in their investigation of a lottery scam after a 75-year-old San Francisco man was swindled out of $10,000.
According to San Francisco police, the victim received a letter in the mail last week from Global Investment Securities World Trust Services telling him he had won $82,459.61 in the Canadian lottery. The letter included a false notarized letter listing the man's name, address and the amount he had supposedly won and a bogus receipt purporting t

Store Managers playing sscratch offs
So many people have claimed that a store knows which scratch-off tickets are winners and which are not, but the clerks I ask say that's not true. I have absolutely no idea. However, if you believe this woman is committing an act of fraud or theft, then by all means report her. You can probably do this anonymously, although you will need some kind of proof, which is important any time you file an accusation. If you feel strongly that she is cheating, there might be an investigation into the matte

If you hit the jackpot
I know anonymity is an ongoing topic, but I have a new question. You know how people legally get their names changed, i.e. Hollywood stars? If you really didn't want your real name in the paper because of greedy relatives or acquaintances, couldn't you legally change it before claiming your prize? Just a thought, although it might sound silly. Of course, you'd still be obligated to pay any taxes or past debts, since you would have the same social security number. Then you'd have to get a n

N.C. Lottery begins today

Actually the SC tickets that I have won with have the code. I imagine that NC's will as well. That's how they are universally made these days to prevent fraud I think.

Prime Ticket Service in January?
The best I can say is try a different credit card. The fact is that these days anything related to gambling has very touchy credit card fraud prevention, so that's just a fact of life. The credit card I successfully used didn't work a month ago with their service, so that should give you an indication that these things change.Chewie, your comment implies that somehow they don't want you to win, which is just preposterous. They run a great service, and lots of people were affected by their rec

Hoosier Lottery Does It Again
Powerplayer:We've taken this case to no fewer than five different law firms, one of which was in Chicago, the rest here in Indiana. We never heard back from Chicago, but three Indiana attorneys have told us that what we have is probably sufficient to convict on at least three RICO predicates (wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and misappropriation of public funds). That's the good news. The bad news is that none of them are willing to file the case because, and I quote, ...the stateh

A Losers Lament
On your point #2, Indiana not only uses a bad RNG for drawings, but they are also very secretive about their operations, and don't answer all the questions that people send them. Further, there have been documented cases of insider fraud at the Hoosier Lottery (news stories posted at Lottery Post), so many people are naturally suspicious of them.I think the main point Jeff is making is that he has tried all those things you mentioned (and many more!) and is in a long luckless period that starte

Stolen lottery ticket trial underway in Chicago
She was found guilty...the circunstances led the jury that way and the defense's story was garbage. Pathetic what can happen to people's judgement when clouded by greed. What I learned from this case: never trust another person to check your tickets for you. I check all my tickets online myself each day. When I have a winner I already know what I am getting paid. Another dumb thing some people do is give your unsigned tickets to the store clerks to check for you by running them through the Lott
