The Ultimate Cash vs. Annuity Poll
If a jackpot was 100 mil and the cash option was 50 mil and the winner chose annuity .would the states pay the full 50 mil for the annuity policy or a lesser amount based on the bids by the annuity companys.I thought I read some where that states put the annuities out for bid.In that case the states would pocket the change if the purchase price was less than 50 mil for the 100 mil policy

Gary: Then you would have TWO companies making money off your winnings before you gain full control of your money-the firm selling the annuity to the Mass. Lottery, and the company buying the annuity from you. From a player's standpoint, there is absolutely NO justification for Mass. to continue requiring their 6/42 or 6/49 winners to receive annuity payments. Neither game has been changed since 1991, when only two games gave players the choice of cash instead of the annuity. The two Mass. games

The Ultimate Cash vs. Annuity Poll
Ok, let's figure this out. Let's take the current Megamillions Jackpot. 12 million annuity, 7 million cash.Annuity is $461,538 a year for 25 years. The interest rate is about 4.5 percent. Crossing with an annuity table for inflation that gives us a $6,843,781 Present Value. So that's $7,000,000 now cash option, or $6,843,781(PV) after 25 years. Hmmmmmmm. Guess which one I would take. Even figuring in taxes there's not much of an advantage to an annuity. I don't see taxes going down in 25 years.
