I don't approve of lottery pools at work for many reasons. Maybe you run yours efficiently although I doubt it. For one thing you have too many people in it. I would love it if the state didn't collect tax on lottery wins until the cash value is $20 million or higher. I've got only two minor issues about how lottery winnings are taxed. Extremely few players win large amounts more than once, so winning a large prize is almost always a once in a lifetime windfall, while most people who are paying anything in the top bracket have a high income every year. Yin and Yang. You can't lose if you don't play and you can't win if you don't play. The lottery only gives back 50% to the players, and most of that goes to the very small percentage of people who win the very big prizes. Other than the extremely rare situations, such as the MA Win Fall game, if you're anything close to statistically normal you're going to lose at least 70% of the money you bet, so it's stupid to play the lottery.
