Do some number combinations have better odds?
The rules weren't made to prevent players from buying fixed jackpots. I'm pretty sure any state lottery would allow a player to buy a $1 straight ticket on the 1000 possible pick-3 outcomes and gladly pay them $500 the next day. The rules are there because of the rolling jackpots when the jackpots occasionally exceeds the possible outcomes. I don't know if the rules are based on an amount of play, based on the amount of time a terminal would be tied up, or a combination of both. Your problem

When was the last time you saw a multi-state lottery jackpot...
Well, I was right and wrong about the PB jackpot finally paying for itself. On the one hand, it STILL increased by only $10 million. In fact, the jackpot amount on draw #8 is lower than the jackpot amount in draw #7 in its previous run! Very pathetic, especially since you would expect it to roll a bit faster now that Mega Millions has had two jackpots won in a relatively short amount of time, keeping its jackpots under $40 million. On the other hand, the actual sales were ~$36.5 million fo

Do most people who win the lottery jackpots buy just one Ticket or multiple tickets?
Hi everyone, I'm just wondering if most people who win the Jackpots are people who buy just one ticket or if they buy multiple tickets. Sometimes I will hear about a winner who bought 5 lines and sometimes people who will buy 3 lines. I also know that sometimes people who have never played the lottery or rarely play will win while some people who can play for 30 years or so never win. I tend to buy one ticket per draw since the odds of winning the Jackpot on either MM or PB are so astronomica

Will Powerball roll over?
With odds similar to those of MM, there is no logical reason why it shouldn't roll over as many times as MM. The fact that that fewer people are playing it because of its higher price should make it roll over even more. The frequent wins right after rising its price was unusual and came at a bad time since they were hoping to generate larger jackpots and convince everyone that a higher price offered some advantages. When MM went to it present format in 2005, they said jackpots could approach

$363 MILLION: Mega Millions lottery jackpot raised due to heavy sales
believe me that i'm saying because it's true that i am a 2 time major massachusetts lottery winner. no, not millions but many tens of thousands. and yes, i squandered it and regret doing so. these lotteries were never intended to grow jackpots of this size. my main gripe is that people sneer at lets say powerball because it's only 40 million. too many will only play if they can collect 100 million or more. i just fail to understand why anyone wouldn't be content with winning 3 million in a much

A Simply Curious... Lottery Player, looking for Answers or Opinions
Mytriplecrown: I share your same concerns (and suspicions). For example, look at all those major Mega Millions and Power Ball large Jackpots over the last 7 years (Docents of jackpots from 258 390 millions each); these jackpots were won by, mostly, a single ticket. Well that is very unusual, when a little research reveals that such games (specifically Power Ball in this case) takes an estimate annual sales in excess of $20,000,000,000 (yes! 100 Billions). In RSTech.us home page you can rea

Powerball multi-state lottery to raise prices, jackpots
I dispute it because I went to a better school and/or was more able to understand what was taught. You'd be right if we were talking about the chances of a jackpot being claimed by an individual vs the chances of being claimed by a group. I'm counting the couples and families (and the 2 unknowns) as individuals, even though multiple family members may have bought tickets, so the 2010 results show that 9 of the 12 jackpots were claimed by individuals. Having gotten more out of my education

Powerball multi-state lottery to raise prices, jackpots
You do know that the discussion is about jackpots being won by individuals versus jackpots won by groups , right? The jackpot was only won 12 times, but there were more than 12 winners. Besides the Flatbush Avenue Dodgers there were at least two other jackpots that were won by groups. One of them is clear for anyone able to understand the table you posted. The other received just a tiny bit of notice recently, both here and in other news sources. That there may be a dispute that delays paymen

Massachusetts Lottery closes loophole after big wins
That may be true if those big spenders spent $100,000.00 during regular drawings trying to win the jackpot and only matched a couple of 5of6 for $8,000.00 but they only spend that kind of money to get a 5of6 at 1:40,000 odds when the rolldowns could make a 5of6 worth more than $40,000+. Since the state doesn't want the regular players thinking they are just fatten up the jackpots for the big spenders, they had to act. If those regular players stopped playing then there wouldn't be any $2M jackpo

Changes coming to Powerball multi-state lottery game in January
People saying what they like and dislike about the up coming PowerBall changes doesn't mean much. Fact is there no way to tell if those complaining even play often enough that it matters. PB will knows if players like the changes by the number of tickets they buy once the changes are made. Ohio had the same problem a few years back when their game was the most popular game in the area and they had quite a few out of state winners of $30M-$60M jackpots. They listened to people complain about m
