Couldn't they force you to redeem it at the vending machine? It's not worth the hassle for them. I am a regular of a major grocery store and the location of the vending machine is at the other side of the store. Imagine if there are 8 people in line. I am the first one in the line. Check the vending Machines at Publix or Winn Dixie. They did not have it at the counter only in the machine.
