Low Jackpots and the Economy
As was already pointed out, MM was over 100 million barely 2 months ago. PB was at 200 ust over one month ago. That we don't remember when it last happened doesn't mean it didn't happen recently. For some reason people tend to have faulty memories about how often (or how rarely) some things happen, and how long ago (or how recently) they happened.
If more people are playing then more people are winning, but that does nothing to limit the size of jackpots. On average, more people playing means

$132 million Mega Millions jackpot was purchased in Mableton, Georgia.
well in 2006 it was Ohio every one was getting upset about winning the Major jackpots and if I am not mistaken in 2005 it was New York ....in 2007 it was Texas ands New Jersey with 2.25 jackpots each and it was 9th ranked New Jersey beating out 2nd ranked Texas by approx 40 million annuity dollars....This year its Georgia and a very quiet Michigan with 2 jacpots each...however Georgia only has 36- 2nd teir prizes and Michigan has 31, while New York and California are tied with 77 each....

If Powerball & Megamillions combined & the tickets cost 2 dollars..
Well sweetbitterkiss, The price and odds are determined by the size of the population which can play, the jackpots, etc... So the larger the jackpots and the less tickets sold = higher prices. The less the jackpots and the more tickets sold = lower prices. Those are just simple examples, it can be made way more complicated if those who run the lottery choose.
It also depends on what the lottery needs to bring in. Remember lotteries are designed to bring in money, not pay out money.

Powerball lottery jackpot hits $200 million
I hope you meant to say that your chances of having the only winning ticket are diminshed. That's true, but even for jackpots at or near record levels the chance of multiple winners is fairly low. For jackpots in the 50 to 150 million range the chance is much less than the chance of a single winner. Even for the recent $275 million MM jackpot there was only 1 winning ticket despite all of the numbers being birthday numbers. Even if there had been 4 winners (I think the record for MM or PB is 3)

The Implications of Cracking the Code..
This will probably never happen again. Now days it's unlikely that the jackpots of any game will have a cash value several times the cost of buying all the possible combinations.
I can remember when Ohio had a 6/49 game that started at $8M or so and rolled at least $4M after ever drawing when there were no winners and had jackpots of $40M+. Now their 6/49 game starts at $1M and is lucky to roll $100K and never gets to over $8M.
What happened? Did players start picking winners more oft

Lotto fever isn't what it used to be
Even 10 years ago when a 150M Powerball was unheard of I remember standing on line for 3 hours in CT and then hearing go 5 miles up I-95, there's no lines there! so the places that get busy would always be the border stores. The Speedway in Richmond is the first exit in Indiana coming from Ohio and Stateline Stationery the first exit going into CT. One big problem was with long lines they said QP ONLY. We have several of these high jackpots each year, more places to play, and you can usually p

Lotto fever isn't what it used to be
As I stated in another thread earlier, playing for a large lottery jackpot use to be an event. Before MegaMillions came to Ohio, I would travel to Indiana to play PowerBall and to Michigan to play the BigGame and there were always long lines of folks waiting to buy tickets if the jackpots were over $80M. Sometimes there would even be a TV news team covering the event.
These day more states participate so there are more places to play with smaller crowds at them and $100M jackpots are kinda

Powerball Advertising
Years ago a group talked Ohio into a similar idea which nearly ruined its lottery. Ohio is just now recovering from it after adding MegaMillions to its game.
Years ago when Ohio had some of the biggest jackpots in the area $30M to $60M and people from outer state would travel to Ohio to play, they put a cap of $20M ($10M cash) that one ticket could win so there would be plenty left for the next winners and people stopped playing. Ohio advertised $60M jackpots but everyone knew that it was f

Mega Jackpot Boredom
There was a time when a $200M lottery jackpots was an event and lots of people wanted to be part of it even if they had to travel out of state and/or stand in line to buy a ticket. Now days jackpots of this size are expected and many people wouldn't buy a ticket for any thing less and certainly wouldn't stand in line for it.
The PB jackpot is $300M this weekend and usually I would be planning to drive to Indiana for tickets but the MM jackpot is $200M+ and the cash value of both jackpots ar

Lotteries long for 'jackpot fever'
To lottery players, $100 million ain't what it used to be.
A seven-month streak of jackpots that were big, but not gigantic, has sent traditional lottery sales plummeting in many states.
In the past six months, Mega Millions sales are down 30% in Texas compared with a year earlier and 38% in Massachusetts. Powerball sales are off 6% in Wisconsin.
The USA is suffering from jackpot fatigue, lottery officials say.
There was a time when $50 million created a stir. Then we needed $
