Depends on the state. Most states will allow a large jackpot to be split among the members of a group if a form with the social security numbers of its member is turned in however smaller winnings can only be claimed by one person who is responsible for all the taxes. If anyone beieves the money will be put back in, I have a bridge for sell. This is the very same thing the politicians in Washington have done with the surplus Social Security and Transportation funds, which should have been placed in a trust fund. Those two surplus funds every year are somewhere around 100 billion dollars.

Geez. A guy who works as a security official wants to call a newspaper when any idiot should be able to figure out that if the lottery doesn't still own the tickets they'll know who does, and then the lottery expect the guy to drive over and deliver their lost property? I don't understand why someone would question this at all. If you collect unemployment, that means you worked for it, since you need to qualify based on previous employment and wages. Even if you collect a disability check, it means you earned the money, since it's based on your social security earnings. My New Year's Wish, more that a Resolution, is for financial security. I hope that in 2009, I will get a call form on of the lotteries that I subscribe to, informing me that I have won, if not a multi-million dollar jackpot, hopefully a substantial nest egg. Use a return receipt, insure it appropriately, and sign the back of the winning ticket, it'll be pretty safe. It'll definitely be safer than for eg. returning a pair of glasses to Nicole Brown Simpson or being a security guard at the WalMart in LI. NY. before a Christmas sale.

I also prefer Direct Deposit. Some companies won't send checks any more by mail. I think the Federal Government only sends Social Security checks by Direct Deposit now, but I'm not 100% positive. I scratch my head when hearing that tickets go unclaimed...When I purchased a ticket I treat it as a winner untill it is proven wrong, this way I treat it with care and security to prevent it from lost.
