When was the last time MM was higher than PB?
RJOh, I think the 'default', the most commonly referred to amount is what's printed on the tickets, what's posted here at LP on Worldwide Jackpots, what's on the monitors where they sell tickets. I'm just saying......... billionaire2be, Yeah, I remember the MM last year, I think it finally landed on $656M and was split two or three ways. One of the winners was not too far from where I live, in a toen called Red Bud, IL. Someone had started a rumor that someone else in that town had w

It now appears certain that Megamillions will go 6 months...
True enough. If one plays by expectation value - and I very much doubt that many people do - Powerball can be a better bet. But, of course, the Powerball annuity jackpot needs to be more than twice as large (annuity) for that to happen. (Recall that the expectation value is the likely prize - adjusted for the probability of there being more than one winner - divided by the odds times the cost of the ticket.) What Powerball can almost never do - unless it goes to a billion dollars annuit

Estimated jackpot vs. Actual cash value
billionaire2bee, It's actually more complicated than meets the eye. Here's everything you ever wanted to know about estimating jackpots. And more! For those who think they've found an edge in one of their studied games, this also tells them what to expect if they try to exploit it. http://www.mass.gov/ig/publications/reports-and-recommendations/2012/lottery-cash-winfall-letter-july-2012.pdf --Jimmy4164 p.s. For those who ALREADY KNOW all about this, I knew too. However, it address

End of game schedule / Top prizes not yet claimed
Ahhh the middle man. Very informative post- thanks again! I was just trying to figure out how many retailers there might be in IL- best guess 5-10K. CA bigger market than IL. IL has at least one scratcher with 7 mil odds- $20 ticket. So once again, transparency is key as you indicated before. Without knowing the volume of sales for a particular game, in addition to exactly knowing when and where the jackpots were sold well, then you best have lady luck on your side. Either way, I ll

Are you more comfortable playing the lotto as an individual or joining a pool?
Good question. Overall I prefer going at it solo, but also enjoy the group excitement that the large PB and MM jackpots bring. When the JP in those games climb above $200 million we have an informal group of 8 of us at work that throw in $5 each for a bunch of quick picks. I always pick my own numbers in the games I play regularly, so it's a nice change not having to take the time selecting a bunch of numbers to play. Being the resident lottery guru at the workplace I'm usually the once

Do some number combinations have better odds?
Stack47, On February 15th at 1:56pm you said, Any strategy is much better than trying to get lucky with QPs. I take this to mean that you don't think much of the Quick Picks in Kentucky. Based on what just happened in Virginia, I'm thinking it might be worth your while to put up with the trouble and expense of traveling there to purchase your Big Game tickets. The state Random Number Generators there seem to be working quite well. https://www.lotterypost.com/news/257237 His winning nu

Would you still play Mega Millions if your state lottery's jackpot was bigger?
In Ohio, PowerBall and MegaMillions tickets are available at the same terminal that sells Ohio's Classic Lotto and Rolling Cash5 tickets. Today: Rolling Cash5 is at $100,000 with odds of 1:6K Classic Lotto is at $27,700,000 with odds of 1:14M PowerBall is at $40,000,000 with odds of 1:175M MegaMillions just rolled to $13,000,000 with odds of 1:175M Since jackpot size and their odds of winning are the only things that matter to me, it not hard to tell which game I'm playing toda

Fallacies, and two REAL ways of improving your chances
When one plays all the game's numbers among their lines they are 100% guaranted to have all the winning numbers among their lines. When one plays all the game's numbers on a minimum number of lines they are 100% guaranteed to have all the winning numbers among six lines or less. However, they still have to play ALL the lines necessary to put all the numbers into play and because we don't know the outcome in advance we go into the draw holding for 6/48, 8 lines in 12 million (though we k

The stores video camera.
...there are hundreds of millions of losing tickets in order for that one person... I would highly question those numbers right there. If there were really hundreds of millions of losers in order to obtain a winner, those Powerball guys have a lot of explaining to do as to why they only increased their prize by $10 on 4(?) separate occasions in December. Same for MM, as they haven't had a jackpot of over $100 million since mid-September. I understand the odds are something like 1 in 1

Do some number combinations have better odds?
I was doing some hard research, and I found a thread from 2011. That was a post by jammy4164. I just didn't do the usual highlighting because his name was there. Now I am not all too familiar with Ion, but his FFG theory is interesting, and I think he has some on point theories into picking correct numbers such as anticipating skips strings. I also understand that Ion is a great programmer, but I have not used his programs, so jippy4164 can talk bad all he wants. Now when spammy 4164
