Record lottery winner's wealth cost him dearly
It was coming up on Christmas, and Brenda-the-biscuit-lady was inexplicably happy as she walked to work in the predawn darkness. Brenda didn't just make biscuits over at the C L Super Serve for $6 an hour. She served up good cheer. How you doin', honey? she'd greet customers, with such enthusiasm that they had no choice but to smile back. Dad-gonnit, you are growing up on me! she'd call to schoolchildren, just to see them grin. What grade you in now? At 39, Brenda Higginbotham didn't have muc

Suspicious lottery player wins big Powerball prize
The possibility of winning big has kept Rod Jacobs buying Powerball tickets for years, even though he's always wondered if the lottery is rigged - that is, until last week when he and his roommate, Marian Mathewson, won $100,000 off a ticket Mathewson purchased at the McCammon Chevron in Idaho. Now I'm eating crow with a smile, Jacobs said.Jacobs said he'll probably put his share of the money in the bank because he already has everything he needs. But he said Mathewson, an avid quilter, bought

Why do you play the lottery?
I'm on disability and been thru life's downtimes. I play cos I feel millions of dollars is the only way I can be happiest .. maybe not exactly happy, but happiest .I sorta think it's all a semi-scam also. If the monies fund the school systems, then a few years ago, why was there a school/schools holding class in bathrooms, cos the classroom walls were deteriorating with harmful materials? That's only just one example I heard in the news. Anyway, I think there really are real winners.. normal p

Minnesota top pull-tab state
Imagine that every fruitless pull of a casino's slot machine produced a colorful bit of trash and you get an idea of how the garbage bins at American Legion Post 1776 overflow on a good night.Last year $6.4 million worth of pull-tabs were sold from this tidy metal-clad hall -- tops in a state that is tops in the nation -- allowing Post 1776 to pass a profit of $246,000 on to hundreds of schools, sports programs and charities.Though they're sold without the glamor of Las Vegas or the marketing bu
