Federal online gambling legislation clears big hurdle
Maybe there are some teeth in the push for legalization and sensible federal regulation of the Internet gambling industry after all. Sponsored by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) chairman of the House Financial Services Committee HR 2267 is a bill designed to establish federal oversight of an online gambling industry that currently resides in murky legal waters for U.S. players. It passed overwhelmingly 41-22 via committee vote last week, advancing the legislation to the House floor, where it h

Tenn. wants to limit winnings
I love it! Republicans have controlled the legislature for all of two months out of 40 something years and every problem, every stupid piece of legislation that EVER came out of the state legislature is blamed on Republicans. What's the matter? Ticked off that George Bush is no longer around! The fact that this particular piece of legislation is uneforceable hasn't yet ocurred to anyone. There are so many ways out there to circumvent the penalty thus making the law laughable. Ease up, good p

Tenn. wants to limit winnings
This is just another one of the stupid a$$ed pieces of legislation that I have seen come out of the TN legislature this year. Pure stupidity!! Makes you wonder what they talk about all of the time. they want to limit their (food stamp recipients) to $600.00. I don't think that there are that many folks on food stamps playing but if they are and win a major jackpot, they should get it all. I am so disgusted by the stupid legislation until they just make me sick!! At election time folks need to pa

Antigua gets favorable WTO gambling ruling over U.S.
The United States has suffered a new setback in a four-year-old legal battle with Antigua and Barbuda over U.S. restrictions on Internet gambling, a U.S. trade official said on Thursday. At issue is an April 2005 World Trade Organization ruling against U.S. prohibitions on online horse race betting. Since then, the U.S. Congress has passed additional legislation to ban certain financial transactions related to gambling over the Internet. Gretchen Hamel, a spokesman for the U.S. Trade Repre

Okla. lawmaker aims to stop lottery winners from staying anonymous
An Oklahoma state senator from Edmond plans to introduce legislation to prohibit people from forming anonymous trusts after learning they have won a lottery prize. Sen. Clark Jolley, R-Edmond, said this proposed legislation stems from instances including one this week where a trust claimed a lottery prize. We were told the lottery would be open, it would be transparent full accountability. We would know the name and towns of everyone who had won, Jolley said. I think winners being a

outlook dims in senate for online bill
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Prospects have dimmed for swift U.S. Senate passage of a bill to outlaw most forms of Internet gambling as industry trade groups and lawmakers raise objections, congressional sources said on Wednesday. Efforts to move a House-passed measure through the Senate have run into opposition from lobbyists representing casino owners and horse- and dog-racing interests in recent days. Some Republican senators have broken ranks and placed holds on it, the sources said T

Online Lottery Soon to be Illegal/new law
Oh I've done that often enough on various legislation. All that happens is I get a form letter back telling me that the politician basically knows best and he/she is still going to push the legislation. IOW you just get blown off. I doubt the pol even ever gets to see those letters. They spend tons of money on staff that looks at them and sends the form letters. And you never hear from or get anything in the mail from them during their whole term until they're running for re-election of

illegal immigrants poll
Seems the burden lies with separate lotteries and their rules which conform to their state laws. I voted yes on this based on their ability to present whatever legal documents are currently required in order to claim a jackpot. Now, with that question being brought up by current protests, current pending legislation, proposed legislation it seems fitting that states should revise their laws to conform to what residents of those states demand..... since lotteries are controlled by states

Wyoming closer to starting a lottery
A bill that would bring a lottery to Wyoming made it past a second hurdle Thursday, prompting some to wonder how far it will go this year.Similar bills in recent years haven't progressed far.Rep. Wayne Reese, D-Cheyenne, said he thinks this year's legislation will make it through the House and be delivered to the Senate. This year, as in the past, the argument for having a lottery is based in the amount of money that goes outside state lines as Wyoming residents drive to Nebraska, South Dakota, M

And I agree with you about the lousy percentage that NY allocates to its prize pool. Most of the time, getting these huge lottery organizations to do anything positive for the players is a monumental challenge, mainly because it requires that legislation be passed. In the case of the NY prize pool, I believe that percentage was allocated through legislation, and not just a number that the lottery came up wit
