Interesting info re: Illinois Selling lottery
This is part of an e-mail regarding Illinois selling the lottery, it covers several things that are constantly discussed here, read on (bolding, colored text, mine)
THE other day I saw a headline indicating that Illinois was about to get out of the lottery business. Having made my living for the past decade exploiting lottery winners and recently having repented my ways I hoped the state had simply grown tired of profiting from its citizens weaknesses.
But as I read the artic

Lottery mega-jackpots generating less 'buzz'
Okay here I am: There is always a group of people who will buy lottery tickets. For instance, some people play the same four numbers day after day on the daily lottery. Others will play only Powerball and only when there is a large enough jackpot. If there are more large Powerball jackpots in a given year, then more people are likely to play the lottery than normally would, driving up sales.
Every month I have a certain amount I spend on the Lottery. I run three lottery Pools

Lotto Stats - Missouri
From the Missouri Lottery website, Just thought these may be interesting to some here:
The three highest multistate Lottery jackpots awarded nationwide were: $365 million (one ticket) in Powerball on Oct. 19, 2005; $363 million (split two ways) in the Big Game on May 9, 2000; and $340 million (one ticket) in Powerball on Feb. 18, 2006. Currently, 215 jackpot tickets worth $1 million or more have been sold since the Missouri Lottery began 20 years

Virginia Lottery adds Sunday drawings
In an effort to ward off losses to North Carolina, the Virginia Lottery is adding Sunday drawings, starting this weekend.
Competition south of the border will cut into Virginia Lottery profits this year, but new games could limit the losses to North Carolina.
You don't want to sit still and watch that flattening of sales occur, said Sheila Hill-Christian, executive director of the State Lottery Department.
The North Carolina lottery, started last year, could lop profits $50 million, d

Ohio Lottery to ditch Lot 'O Play game over lack of interest
...or maybe over a lack 'O good name?
The bingo-style Lot 'O Play game that the Ohio Lottery launched slightly more than a year ago will disappear Jan. 20 after a long struggle to win the hearts of players.
In its place, Classic Lotto, a more traditional and preferred game of chance, will debut Jan. 21, lottery officials said.
Lot 'O Play didn't catch on, and it's not what our players wanted, said Mardele Cohen, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Lottery.
Lot 'O Play, which replaced th

Hot Lotto coming to New Mexico
Lottery players in New Mexico will soon have a hot new way to win a cool million when tickets for Hot Lotto go on sale Sunday, November 12.
The first drawing to include New Mexico will be held on November 15.
Hot Lotto will be a nice complement to our current games, filling the niche between Roadrunner Cash and Powerball, said Lottery CEO Tom Romero. New Mexico now has the option of playing for a huge jackpot (Powerball) with higher odds of winning, or a smaller jackpot (Hot Lotto) that

Probability of a Rollover in Powerball.
The Powerball jackpot has rolled over. The cash value of the jackpot is $38.8M. The advertised annuity value is $83.0M. Eighth draws average 18.4M in sales. If the number of tickets that sell in the next drawing is average then the randomized probability of various numbers of winners will be as follows:
088.16%
111.11%
20.70%
30.03%
The mixed linear/exponential model I use to suggest the probability of long term behavior of the Powerball, exclusive of reserve

Workout for Pick 5, 5+ and 6 games
RJOH recently commented on the lack of workouts for Pick 5, Jackpot and Pick 6 games in LP.
I think just about all serious lottery players have various schemes they use to pick their numbers. Having massaged lottery numbers for many years, I suspect some of the systems, which I call substitutes, key on frequency of individual numbers, odds and evens, roots, sums, and a variety of other data streams based on winning numbers for a particular game.
Complexity is probably the reason why player

Probability of a Rollover in Powerball.
The Powerball jackpot has rolled. The cash value is now $83.5M. The advertised annuity value is represented as being $179M. The lottery has been selling above average sales on this run. Although in a temporal sense, the upcoming draw is the 13th in this series, the jackpots are better reflected by an average 14th draw. I will therefore treat the system as if it were a 14th draw. The average number of sales on a 14th draw is about $40.0M tickets. If this is the number of sales reali

Math and Lotteries
I don't think ideas supported with math/statistical data are harder to describe but they can be more easily scrutinized so they may require a little more thought by their posters.
Some posters enjoy posting ideas off the top of their heads and suggesting others try them to
see what happens which works fine for games like pick3 since the odds of getting a hit are
better than those of other lottery games and the ideas are usually within most players budget.
Many find these types of posts e
