Lump Sum or payments?
Here's a thought if you couldn't handle your finances before you win the lottery what makes a person think they can after they win the lottery. Only so many people are able to accomplish this. The vast majority of people who win big are probably living from paycheck to paycheck. To handle a jackpot win you need some kind of money management education if you intend to handle your own finances. I know lots of people who came into money either through an inheritance or the lottery and a fe

Divvy it up
Since most of my relatives have done nothing to offend me that hasn't been easily forgiven in their 35+ years of life, I have no qualms about sharing a major win with them. In fact I have already signed a notorized statement gifting a 25% ownership interest in any Mega Millions ticket I purchase to a large number of relatives. That way I don't expect to have to pay gift taxes on the large amounts they would receive in the event our ticket should win a jackpot, as I would if I owned the ticket al

7-7-7 was a lucky day!!
So does it also mean that you lied about not being so smart in one of your posts a few days ago? I ask this because it's hard for me to think that someone who's a fry short of a happy meal can make tons of money...lol Unless you had an inheritance...

One more annuity vs cash discussion
A large factor comes down to the age of the person. Taking an annuity at 80 makes no sense. Take the cash, spend it fast, and heck with the grandkids inheritance. A younger person in their 20s, 30s, or even 40s would be better served in most cases by taking the annuity and doing their best to try to live a normal life. Even if the person simply rolled the cash not needed into bank accounts paying 4-5% per year (no risk) your money will grow by hundreds of thousands and eventually millions by

If a friend...
I'm no attorney, but here is my thinking on this subject. In the absence of a contract otherwise, I would expect that the full federal income tax burden would fall on the individual making the claim, in this hypothetical situation, me. As a gift, there would not have been a contract otherwise. So if I wanted to split the jackpot, if we are talking about a jackpot win, I'd have to make allowance for the amount of taxes I'd actually owe, not just the amount withheld. But wait! That's not

$853,492 gone
I've ranted about this in a few posts and there have been other comments about careless people who don't claim their prizes. In March at least 3 Fantasy 5 tickets expired in FL. I don't care if it's only $53K or $87K like the ones that expired a few days ago. 2 expired on March 30 in a town called Bushnell that I never heard of, so I wonder if they were purchased by the same person. Out of curiosity I got on the FL site at around 11pm that night to see if someone had woken up at the las

Nasty stat, this
It's true. Majority of the lottery winners are low-middle class and do not know how to manage large amounts of money like that. Normally they go beyond broke and end up worse off that before they win the lottery. So many people think they will be happy when they win the lottery or fall into a large amount (inheritance, etc.)... those people do not change. Happiness comes from within, not from an amount of money. Sure they stress of paying your bills is eliminated, but you have a ton more stres

Mega Millions jackpot winner headed to divorce court
Let's see separated then together after major windfall. I agree she will get something. Why weren't they divorced before? She would probably get something even if they were divorced. I don't care what he does with the money. It is his. They were separated. This whole country is full of people who think they are entitled. Marriage is for better or worse. It can't just be for better.I sincerely hope she is a wonderful person but I'm a little jaded by past lottery winners' stories. The cemetary ca

Anyone have dream book numbers fo this?
Quote: Originally posted by CopyCat on June 28, 2004Hi Dollie,When I read your dream, I got the feeling that the cat represents a friend, and that the friend wants to keep something from you, or something like not telling you something., or a possible inheritance of some type, insurance, bonus check, the number 11 sticks out to me, could be November. I have always been intuitive, goes back three generations, and now the fourth one also gets the feelings. I remember when my grandchild was about

Does God really hate gambling?
Someone once told me that technically Money is created by Man Man created non-living things cars, buildings, computers, planes, ships etc.... God created living things plants, animals, people, planets, oceans etc.... so in a sense it's not God's money it's our money that's why we abuse it most of the time or aquire it in negative wayssteal, bribe, embezzle, extort, sell drugs etc... and postive ways like start a business, win a lottery, recieve an inheritance,College Degree, invent something etc... So gambli
