EuroMillions jackpot at record levels, capped at €190 million
It's not like the lottery is the only place you can get an annuity. There are thousands of insurance companies that sell annuities. If you want fixed income, you can also buy 10 year or 30 year treasuries. If you won the jackpot, you can take the cash then use half the prize money to buy an annuity or treasuries.

Why not choose the annuity?
The real question with taking the annuity is if it's possible to take a portion of the after tax cash, invest it, and and get the same amount in 30 years. I'm pretty sure most financial adviser will suggest taking the cash if for nothing other than a business reason. It's seems that when discussing cash vs annuity , the fact the annuity will be taxed and possibly at the same tax rate but over 30 years, is usually ignored. And after 30 years a $60 million annuity jackpot might be really $36 milli

Why not choose the annuity?
If the annuity is such a terrible choice, then why does MM and PB even offer it? Maybe because it benefits the lottery? I heard from a site that shall go unnamed that somehow spreading the payments over time benefits the lottery more than the player. I know the payout is in reality the same though. I think the annuity rate would have to be high for me to take it. A 5% annual return on a starting balance of $25.55 million will be much higher than a 10% annual return on an average annuity pa

Why not choose the annuity?
Today's annuity amount might sound tempting but by the end of the term of the annuity that last payment might buy a car. Or a happy meal!

Indiana couple claims $27.5 million Lotto prize
The annuity is calculated based on the amount of cash available/projected to fund it, so basically $11.1 million is what they had allocated for the jackpot. 39.8% of sales. Interestingly, the day after this jackpot was won, the lottery amended their rules regarding rollovers and the annuity jackpot.

Lucky Va. couple claims three major lottery prizes in one month
It's like MM and PB, some states advertise annuity values as their jackpots even on scratch tickets. In California, if you win $1 million on $10 scratchers, that's what you win, period (minus taxes). So, no one gets the $319K, it's just marketing. I don't think it'll ever change for jackpot games for obvious reasons, but unless we're talking about Lucky for Life type instant games with weekly payments, advertising scratcher games with annuity values is misleading in my opinion..

Why does the Mega Millions Jackpot not start at $40 mil?
If that's the case, then Mega Millions should start at $20 million, but keep the minimum $5 million increases, especially seeing as the Mega Millions annuity is larger than the Powerball annuity given any cash jackpot, because MM's payments increase by 5% each year in contrast to PB's 4%.

Couple wins $3M jackpot 27 years after wife's numbers last came up
I think the only issue with offering 10/15/20 year annuities would be the diminished jackpot number. The current $309 million annuity could very well be $500 million if it was offered as a 50-year annuity. While that amount sounds nice, I would still take the cash option.

Couple wins $3M jackpot 27 years after wife's numbers last came up
....right there with you on this one Drenick1. You know what i was thinking recently, i wonder if in the coming years these lotteries will evolve to where they would offer 10/15/20/25 year annuity options. Of course the cash option would yield the least amount but increase gradually to varying degrees with the 10/15/20/25/30 year option. I think the percentage of people opting for annuity would be much higher.

Ohio Lottery to sell $30 ticket that offers a chance to win $10 million
, mrcraft, that is exactly the problem with the multi-million dollar 1st place prizes with most of these scratch-off lottery tickets! It is SUPER difficult to determine if the $2M-$10M prize is CASH or ANNUITY. I've even gone to, for example, the Illinois Lottery website and they don't feel the need to inform -- and I click on every conceivable link per specific scratch-off game ... usually no mention of if CASH or ANNUITY! Shameful behavior, so I will reward this dishonesty/discourtesy by not p
