If you really were brave/crazy enough to choose the annunity...
if you really really want an annuity, don't you think it might be BETTER to wait a few years til rates go back up and buy one that your heirs will get (instead of the state) in the event that the annuity outlives you?

If you really were brave/crazy enough to choose the annunity...
If I get lucky on my ticket on wednesday night I think I would have a hard time not taking the annuity for the 30 years. I am hoping that if I take the annuity their will be less people asking for handouts. You never know though. It would be a headache that I would like to have some day!-weshar75

If MM rolls over...
Driving upset in the lottery community, the Mega Millions Jackpot rolled over but did not increase in annuity value. In fact the cash value was reduced by 100k. There is much speculation as to why this proved so but no one seems to be happy about this rare occurrence. If it rolls over, what do you think the annuity value will be?

Would you consider someone who won a billion dollar advertised jackpot...
what if they took the billion dollar annuity instead of the lump sum? Maybe they can make the case that they are an annuity billionaire.

Maine couple claims $8.2M Tri-State Megabucks jackpot
I don't think so. Most cash values are higher than half these days, because annuity rates are so low. Remember, the annuity is calculated based on the cash, not the other way around.

How much money would you have to win to be able to quit your job and retire?
Play the Powerball lottery. The starting jackpot is $40M annuity which is a life changing amount with a cash value of about $25M. You only have to sit out for six drawings to play for $100M annuity. Tickets cost $2.

DO you really lose money if u take the annunity over the lump sum?
It depends on how the annuity was funded. If a 25 year annuity is funded with 25 year bonds then the rate is fixed. If it's funded with shorter term bonds the rate may (almost certainly will) change when the bond reaches maturity and the principal is used to buy another bond. Of course that's irrelevant. What matters is that an annuity is a promise to pay a certain amount of money on a certain schedule. How to fund it is up to the entity promising to make the payments. If interest rates are 8

$305 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot in rare territory
The current cash value of $203.3 milion is 66.66% of the anuity value. A 30% increase would bring it to $264.3 million. If that cash value remains 66.66% of the annuity value the advertised annuity jackpot will be $396.5 million. If that's the range MUSL thinks is reasonable they might just advertise it as an even 400, since that will probably create a much bigger frenzy than 396.5, even though they're practically the same amount.

$540 MILLION: Mega Millions buying frenzy sparks another jackpot increase
I'm glad others are mentioning the annuity. I'm a Cash Option person but I went ahead and got an annuity option QP (back in TX for a bit so have to choose at the register).
