Collecting Big Winnings
I also prefer Direct Deposit. Some companies won't send checks any more by mail. I think the Federal Government only sends Social Security checks by Direct Deposit now, but I'm not 100% positive. It's much safer as long as there aren't any glitches.
Believe me, I hear what you are saying. Without getting too specific, 2 years ago I rolled over my IRA and the insurance company put my entire life savings in the mail. I was shocked and also very angry. Like you, I automatically assumed it would

Help Please: Similarities between Lottery & Insurance: my last post for 2008
I don't see a comparison the insurance policy is a done deal under most circumstances... where in the lottery is just a chance you might win regardless of how much you spend for tickets. Since you cant buy all the combinations there is no guarantee for the lottery.
In you last post you said that insurance is a guarantee. (if you pay a monthly payment after 20 or 30 years whenever you die you are guaranteed that your kids or loved ones will get something; a large sum... ) Well that might not h

Devil's Advocate Mode - Foreign Lottery Scams.
It's sad. I think a lot of the lottery scams going on right now are a direct result of the U.S. clamping down on foreign lottery play ... since dealing directly with the lottery agency (and not through a ticket reseller) was, at the time, safe. And now with the internet, it would seem like an easy task to identify certain sites as legitimate (if they existed) and others as scam sites. In Australia's case, such a site could be mentioned on their official government website.
I still think, howe

Surprise $1,000,000 in your Bank Account
For one thing, this smacks of being one of those sweepstake checks scams.
For another, if $1,000,000 shows up in your bank account unexpectedly, you're going to be a baning fraud suspect.
When computers were in the infant stage, two teenagers in Boston hacked into a bank's computers and set up an account that took a few cents from everey deposit.
Unknown to them, this was a Federal Reseverve bank and in a very short time there was enough in the account to get a lot of attention.

$13 million Florida Lotto winner dies a pauper
A former Florida Lotto multi-millionaire has died nearly broke.
Alex Toth's attorney says he was ill and still facing federal tax fraud charges when he died at age 60. The county health department says he died April 5 but a cause was not listed.
Alex and Rhoda Toth won a $13 million jackpot in 1990. But the Pasco County couple say most of the money ran out years ago, spent on gambling, gifts and luxuries.
They were charged in 2006 with filing false tax returns. Alex Toth was scheduled t

The Powerball drawing of the March 30, 2005 game produced an unprecedented 110 second-place winners, all of whom picked the first five numbers correctly, but not the Powerball number. The total came out to $19.4 million in unexpected payouts; 89 tickets won $100,000, and the other 21 tickets won $500,000 due to the Power Play multiplier option.
Powerball officials initially suspected fraud, but it turned out that all the winners received the

POLL: If you could use an alias...
(Another poll for fun):
If there was a lottery where you could win a huge jackpot and remain anonymous when claiming it, but you remained anonymous by using a fictitious name, which one would you use?
Vote for one or make one up and share.
*I.M. Rich is the name most commonly used in check kiting and financial fraud schemes.
* Schloss Geist, German, castle ghost

Yeah, there probably would be- and we'd seem them on Dumbest Criminals on TruTV!
Tom Huckleberry, lottery winner, continued to draw his stipends, having had a friend cash his winning ticket in. His stipends are gone, and the jackpot is frozen while he and the friend are being indicted for fraud. Stay tuned...
and think about this:
Isn't winning a lottery jackpot the extrme example of living off the government?

winning the powerball or megamillions
It goes beyond taxes. There have been cases where jackpot winners who were receiving some kind of assistance or disability had to pay everything back they had received from the state- makes me wonder ehat happens if they win one of the lower prizes, like $10,000.
Unless someone is in a state that lets you remain anonymous, I don't think you could have someone else stand in for you- a lottery ticket is a bearer bond - payable to whoever is holding it (unsigned). If it's signed, it's payable on
