Do you really think there are people out that are so dumb that they don't know that the jackpot is an annuity amount and that they have to pay taxes weather they accept the cash value amount or go for the 20+years annuity amount?

The Megamillions has rolled over again, and the cash value has risen. Based on sales, the cash value reached 10.5 million and is expected to rise to $14.7M, the annuity value from $16M to $25M. This means that the lottery expects to sell about $13.4M tickets. I am going to guesstimate that the actual sales figure will be the same as the last $25M annuity jackpot, 15.8M. What do you mean by hit with an annuity ticket? I know some lottos in the past used to make you select cash or annuity first, but here in PA you decide after you win what you will take.

Unfortunately AFAIK it's still legal for lotteries to force certain winners to receive annuity payments in lieu of cash. The bill signed in 1998 by President Clinton (the 60-day rule) did not go far enough. It should have required ALL lotteries to give ALL winners the option of taking a lump sum if the prize is advertised as an annuity.

libra:At least you (in MD DC) can win first and then decide. In my NY, the current home of the Clintons, you must choose cash or annuity when you PLAY Mega Millions, and cannot change your mind if you win. Of course, you can win a lump sum and purchase an annuity with it, but not versa vice.
