Lottery winner's sweet wish
Bob, I can't say for other countries, but in the United States you can gift an unlimited amount to your spouse without any tax penalty as long as she is a United States citizen. Spouses don't pay estate tax either. They have had no children together but have two each from previous marriages and six grandchildren In the United States I would recommend a will and a trust only because it would avoid some of the hassles if one of the ex-wives or ex-husbands challenged Ida's inheritance. Again

You win the mega millions $163 million on tuesday.
Perfect Timing, as another member said here - if you win a lot of money, get professional counseling. Do you know what irrevocable means? It means you lose control over your money. There are so many posts on LP about Trusts as if they are a means to avoid taxation. A Trust is mainly to set up an estate so when you die your heirs will be protected from probate. It's also a way to control how your beneficiaries receive funds so they don't blow their inheritance all in one place. However, ch

Should tax payers be paid back after a win
I think most people realize it isn't quite that easy to get assistance even if you obviously qualify, but I also think most people agree that the system is broken and there's plenty of abuse. Like many things, it's a good idea that hasn't worked out as well as was hoped for. Of course the lottery and public assistance are separate operations, but that's not the point. I don't care where somebody gets money from, whether it's the lottery, an inheritance from a rich uncle they never even knew

Cash Options of Jackpots
On another thread, dvdiva brought up what happens to beneficiaries should someone die while taking annual payments. I never gave this much thought, because most people I know don't have millions of dollars to invest (I wish!) and most annuities people purchase will pay out a lump sum upon death. That's because there isn't a future value and it's usually an investment to defer taxes and protect savings from creditors, etc. Since the PB annuity is a structured settlement, if a winner chooses a

splitting the jackpot prize with family members.
OOps--this answered a question I had in reply to a similar question on another posting--so I'm NOT trying to be redundant in what I said and you really do have some info for me that I had wondered about. Only one thing, Floyd. . .could you please recheck your sources for the figure of $44,000. What I had read is that the current law allows a yearly gift of $12,000/person per gifter--so you and your wife could gift a total of $24,000 to your mother and $24,000 to your father for a total of $48

What if?
All the prior posts seem to be asking one common question about what would you do if you won big on the Lottery. Instead, I dare to ask this, what you would think of a Lottery Post Member if that individual chose to share the knowledge that he/she was a big winner and how they opted to allocate the funds. Additionally, what if he/she also maintained a regular update as to how good or bad their investments performed? Obviously, this is a hypothetical question. But before you rush into your a

Would you wait until 2011 to gift money away (no gift/estate tax 2011)
Bravo, Orangeman! I agree that taxation is theft, only because the government spends the money we earn any way it pleases. It uses trillions of dollars to destroy a foreign country instead of providing shelter for the homeless and food for the hungry. It uses our taxes to destroy the environment instead of to save it. I want to comment on how eloquently you described the whole idea of gift tax. It is telling people who have either been very wise or frugal that they cannot leave their he

MM Winner Press Coverage
Truthfully, had I had all six matching numbers, I too would have come forward immediately...like Thursday. The news reporters would have found you eventually anyway if you decided to stay in the area. I would have come forward immediately for several reasons: 1) my wife doesn't like me playing the lottery, so in coming forward immediately, my media appearance would have been quick and brief and would have enabled me to do damage control better...like Friday, I would have taken my wife out to
