$220M lottery winner wants to be billionaire
Some people prefer annuity, others lump sum. Honestly I could go either way and be happy. I tend to forget to mark the cash option box when I play so it would end up being an annuity by default.

$220M lottery winner wants to be billionaire
If I won more than $100 million it would be annuity for me. Anything less cash. (Bring on your knives and pitchforks I said I would take annuity.)

$220M lottery winner wants to be billionaire
I dunno, CO. I'd have to think about it, probably take the annuity, just to have on record that I did. Any time that many people care as much as the people here do about whether someone takes the lump or the annuity, I'd say there's almost a moral obligation to run against the current. Even though I'm reasonably sure I wouldn't come within 15 years of living long enough to draw all of it.I just hate people getting into my business enough to be saying what I ought to do.Jack

cash vs. annuity
One aspect that argues in your favor is that interest rates for money and dividends for bonds are extremely low at present. That means you'll get a large lump sum relative to the annuity value which I think uses the treasury bond rates. If shorter-term interest rates keep rising and longer rates fall, you might do better to gradually invest that lump sum as rates rise than the annuity that's stuck with long-term t-bond rates of around 4 percent.

Nightmare scenario
CA, NY, and TX require the cash/annuity choice when you PLAY instead of after you win. All three states go to computer drawings for their in-state games. The computers are manipulated so that only those who chose annuity have a chance to win the jackpot.

California Lottery fixes major problem with Derby game
CA requires the cash/annuity choice when you PLAY instead of after you win. I could see CA (or NY, or TX) drawing its lotto by computer, with the software programmed so that only players who chose annuity had a chance to win the jackpot.

Winner of $56 Million CA Lottery Jackpot Too Busy To Claim Prize
If you got a lump sum and wanted an annuity you could always buy one, that's what Insurance companies sell. If you had an annuity and wanted a lump sum there are plenty of companies out their that would BUY it from you for a fee. Bottom line, where money is involved there are ALWAYS options.

I am about 95% sure that regardless of what a state's rules used to say, a Federal law now allows anyone to change from annuity to cash, within a specific time frame, even if the state requires you to make a choice at the time of purchase. I do not believe, however, that you can switch from Cash to Annuity.

PB streak is over!
Quote: Originally posted by ryanm on April 28, 2005 I know this is off-topic, but one of the winners in the lucky streak, Eric Kyle from Idaho, who won the jackpot on February 23 of this year, had not yet decided whether to take the annuity or cash. It has been over 60 days since he won, so, unfortunately, I believe we have another annuity jackpot value taker.http://www.powerball.com/powerball/pb_stories.aspWow, that's very interesting! Truly a case of you snooze, you lose.
