New Version of Scam
I received a variation of the old e-mail lottery scam this morning, so I thought I'd post it to warn others. It comes under the subject line Visa Card Award Promotion. It's amazingly silly, but you'd be surprised just how many gullible and desperate people there are out there who fall for this scam.I love the part that warns about breaching confidentiality -- you can't tell anyone that you won! (The grammar is also a wonder to behold.) VISA CARD AWARD PROMOTIONWibaustraat 100,1102bg,Amsterdam

People ripped off by one scam could be targeted for dozens more. A database of easy targets is now being used by con-artists.
Stuart Childers said a stack of documents he showed WFTV Wednesday is paper trial of the hundreds of wire transfers his 75-year-old mother sent to scam artists.
She put it to us she wanted to leave a legacy, do something good for the family, Childer said.

Few filing claims in $4.3 million lottery scam settlement; deadline Jan. 7
Victims of the largest lottery scam in U.S. history are expected to pocket only a small fraction of a $4.3 million settlement because of a lack of applicants laying claim to the money, court records show.
But it's not too late.
Claims can be made online through Jan. 7 and those for $10 or less require no proof of purchase.
Larger ones require receipts dating back as far as 14 years.
If you're claiming more than $10 they sure made it difficult, said Craig Johnson, a Manson resident w

S.C. man loses more than $140K to 'you've won the lottery' scam
Every State Lottery has scam alerts on their websites, but lots of the scam are not even lottery related like the SS scam. The common denominator is scams of all kinds are usually aimed at seniors. But there are several IRS refund scams making rounds too that effect all ages.
Probably not possible to educate everybody or even convince some that if you never entered a contest, you can't win their imaginary jackpot. At the end of the day, all we can do is shake our heads and wonder how some pe

Retired N.J. police chief scammed 95-year-old victim out of $29K
Yep, he should have. Which is what the judge said. He's blaming his falling on the scam on his strokes, which he said impaired his judgement. Not buying that as an excuse since he had the wherewithal to turn around and scam someone else. He didn't file a report. He didn't do anything someone in law enforcement should know to do. Instead, he found and targeted an easy mark on whom to perpetrate the same scam so he wouldn't be broke. If it weren't for bank employees he would have gotten away with

Federal officials work to extradite Jamaican lottery scammers
Sorry, but that's one of the most ridiculous ideas I've heard in a long time. The scam works because people are being offered a lot of money and they want that money. It's that simple.
As near as I can figure there are two ways to keep the scam from working. One is to educate everybody, so they'll realize it's a scam. The other is to make everybody stop wanting easy money. What I can't figure out is a way to make either of those happen.
