Mega Millions getting boring
Konane:While you may be critical of the Georgia Lottery, be thankful you don't live in NY. Our Lotto 6/59 game returns to players a ridiculously low 38-40%. Lotto and MM players (within NY) still must make the cash/annuity choice when they PLAY, instead of after they win. Finally, most of our $5 and higher scratch games have ANNUITY-ONLY top prizes.

OH NO!!
Todd:If someone wins in a game where the choice is made WHEN you play (eg NY) and they chose annuity, it's because IMO they didn't think ahead, they made their choice on paper instead of reality, etc.If someone wins, and chooses annuity AFTER they won (assuming they made the choice in the 60-day window), at least they were able to let reality sink in (although it's very possible the winners received bad advice).

TOPIC: If you ever won the Powerball....
Hyper:I think there are ways to have MORE THAN one FDIC-insured account in the same bank...joint? trust? Those who might prefer annuity should take the LUMP SUM anyway, and then SHOP AROUND for an annuity, but use only part of your winnings to buy it.

Is a 500 million jackpot even possible?
Until interest rates increase again, we probably need a 40-payment annuity with a balloon final payment, with backing by Warren Buffett...which is how the Pep$i giveaway _would_ work.Of course, nobody would choose such an annuity.

Pep$i billion-dollar game
Secret:The billion-dollar prize is backed up at least in part by Warren Buffett (he's from Nebraska AFAIK.) It's a 40-payment annuity with a balloon as the final installment. The saving grace is the cash option; because of the unique annuity, the cash value is 25%.

$500 million jackpot...when?
If we're going to have a $1 billion LOTTERY jackpot, perhaps the annuity should be lengthed to 40 annual payments, with the final installment consisting of most of the prize ( balloon ).Of course, _almost_ nobody would choose the annuity.

NY annuity winner STABBED
Did you read the story Todd posted this morning? He hit Lotto on a ticket that was marked 26 ANNUAL PAYMENTS (state regulations _prohibit_ winners from switching to cash). If he were to die (heaven forbid), imagine his heir(s) having to pay inheritance tax on the ENTIRE prize within 10 months? The deadline for paying the estate tax would be shortly after the heir(s) receive the second payment; barely 5% of the prize would have been paid, due to the structure of NY Lotto annuities.

Another CASH vs ANNUITY poll
All annuity payments by the lotteries wether chosen or mandatory should have a clause stating.Upon the death of the annuitant the annuitants estate shall receive any unpaid balance of the cash value of the annuity.
