Andy: I said the ANNUITY up...Yes, you have the right to your opinion. But for you to say that it's almost always correct to take the annuity is just plain silly. You also don't seem to care that certain NY scratch games don't have a cash option. It's MY money if I win. It should be MY choice how to collect-not the lottery's, and not yours either.

SMD,Good point! From an average Joe, it needs to be pure and simple for him.. either one or the other. An average Joe won't think of an option you just mentioned.I agree with your point. If you take LumpSum, I have nothing wrong against buying annuities. Whether taking the Annuity option or buying your own annuities... Stick with Annuity... It just makes sense.

smd: That is precisely what people who want annuity SHOULD do: choose _lump_sum_ anyway, but then SHOP AROUND for the annuit(y/ies), while also considering other kinds of investment vehicles. Of course, where players must make the choice when they PLAY (like here in NY) they are pressured into choosing annuity now , then realize after they win that they blew it.

Hello My Fellow Lotto Players
Thomas,When one takes annuity, the tax rate for your yearly winning flow is a lot lower than taking the lump sum. Trust me on this! 39.6% is not a maximum rate on everything you make. Lotto winnings and short term capital gain max out at 28% pending on your income level. Long term capital gain is less.Once you take lump sum, you immediatly have to pay all the taxes upfront.Think annuity as like your 401K or pension payouts... there are lots of tax benefits.

I don't think so. You probably are glad Massachusetts still requires all 6/42 and 6/49 winners to receive annuity payments. If it were up to you, all Powerball/Mega Millions etc winners would have to receive annuity payments.

Hello My Fellow Lotto Players
Are you saying Mr Whittaker should have chosen annuity? Are you saying if my 83-year-old father were to win, he should take the annuity? Are you saying that if someone has HIV, they shouldn't go for the lump sum?

Hello My Fellow Lotto Players
Hello there Cash Only. I don't make money off of lotto players' winnings. What I do is give sound and reasonable advice.Often, I see too many jackpot winners that go broke in a few years after choosing the lump sum option. There are huge tax benefits, not to mention a whole lot of other great things when choosing Annuity. If the Jackpot is > $20M, choosing annuity makes a whole lot of sense.-Andy

Mega Millions and Powerball Synchronized
Bug: I've mentioned the 30-payment annuity for PB. Several other games have a 30-payment annuity: Florida Lotto, New Jersey (Pick-6) Lotto, etc.

MrSoul: It's never cool to receive annuity payments should you win the lottery. If you're in Massachusetts, _avoid_ their 6/42 and 6/49 since both are ANNUITY-ONLY.
