Georgia lottery winner starts off new year by claiming $983 million Mega Millions jackpot
That idea would partially work in theory... But, what about the tax on the profits...?
You'd pay the tax on both the initial income and the investment income at the 2026 tax rate rate, assuming the investment income also becomes taxable in 2026. You can't avoid paying the tax, but sometimes you can pay at a lower rate.
And while 2026 federal rates have been announced I believe it's still possible for congress to lower (or raise) tax rates. If the highest rate was reduced to 36% then the

Powerball reaches $643 million: highest lottery jackpot of 2025
There isn't any state that if you win a million dollars that you only receive $460K. If they make you take the annuity to reach the million, You still get the Million dollars minus applicable taxes. If they are saying you get a cash option(such as the PB/MM provides) that is always a reduced amount. We have that in TN on the Scratch offs. You win a reduced amount for the 1 time sum.
Federal income taxes are 37% on a million or a billion or a trillion, your state income taxes are never 17%(y

Did Hell freeze over?
Hopefully they will also put up estimated lump sum winnings after taxes.
Figuring out your taxes isn't the lottery's job, and they don't know what your taxes would be, anyway. For a cash value of 10 million or more almost all of it will be in the highest federal bracket and the upper NY brackets unless you've got some big deductions and they don't have a clue about your deductions. If you want to know the after-tax value you can easily do it yourself and come reasonably close.

I know that this is technically not a lottery question, it's about PCH Sweepstakes bankruptcy .
Thank you for that indepth detailed link to the PCH Annuity Sweepstakes Bankruptcy. :) I was mistaken when I said he was supposed to get millions until his death, turns out he was getting $260,000 a year before taxes. That's still a very nice chunk of change to live off. There are people who work for 10 years and accumulate around $260,000 minus taxes and he was getting that every year for 10 years and not having to work. He shouldn't have blown his money frivolously.

would you rather win 1, 10, 50, 100, or 500 million $
I chose 50 million. Enough to make me comfortable for the rest of my life but not really enough to make me a target. The vultures tend to go after the winners who won around a billion or more before taxes and tend to not really care about people who won 50 million before taxes.
