Wow, it looks just like the record run in March 2012 except slightly greater rate of increase of sales. Probably 3, but no more than 4. Assuming it already got to half a billion. The record MM jackpot of $656 million was the 19th drawing of that run. The last time it got to a 19th drawing was the beginning of October, and that was only $189 million. I'd guess we'd need another 5 rolls to reach half a billion dollars on the current run, but if it gets there subsequent rolls will be huge. It seems that America and those visiting US from abroad love the excitement of the multiple huge jackpots generated by Powerball...so it is not too far fetched to think that 2 jackpot games racking up huge jackpots won't take that frenzy even higher. I think the changes to PBS and MM are aimed at capturing the typical non-playing ticket purchaser like that NJ Ocean's 16 lottery pool. It seems that the interest for this particular PB record jackpot was much lower than MM record jackpot a year ago, at least in the state of CA. There are 769,585 winning tickets from PB and 3,009,642 winning tickets from MM in the state. The odds of winning anything with PB is actually better so if given the same enthusiasm, the number of winning tickets from PB should be higher. I think the $2 ticket price discourages people to buy more tickets if at all.

Have you noticed just how little media attention is with the 600 million dollars jackpot? The attention is a far cry from 656 million MM jackpot last year. Moreover, there was no line when I bought a ticket in my location today. I have a feeling that once a record jackpot was reached, it would take another record to get media attention. If the jackpot rolls over and reaches 1 billion dollars, then the media would be all over it.

Very unlikely since neither one has ever hit the billion dollar mark. Both games probably would have hit the billion dollar if they would have rolled 1 more time when they sat there records. Powerball jackpots are increasing faster now that California has joined. Powerball has rolled now last 10 drawings and the annuity JP is now at 222 mill.
