A million bad reasons to vote
Why the Arizona voter lottery is a terrible idea
By Jeff Jacoby, Boston Globe
Arizona voters will face an embarrassment of electoral riches this fall, when as many as 19 proposed laws appear on the state ballot for their approval. Among the measures to be voted on are a 50 percent increase in state legislators' salaries, a constitutional amendment allowing bail to be denied to illegal aliens , and the designation of English as the state's official language.
But one Arizona initiative ha

Big scratch games reinvigorate lottery sales
High-priced scratch-off tickets have revived lottery sales, restoring growth to a state-run business that had sagged in the face of casino and Internet gambling.
The introduction of instant-win tickets that cost $10, $20 and $30 - and offer top prizes of $1 million or more - has set lottery sales on fire in many states. Scratch-off ticket sales soared 59% from 2001 to 2005. That's six times as much as the 10% increase during that time for Powerball, Mega Millions and other traditional lottery

ZEN's Doubles Magic - get this one!!
Quote: Originally posted by sfilippo on June 17, 2006 Quote: Originally posted by CalifDude on June 17, 2006 Here is the problem with this method. You need to hit at least 40% of the time just to break even. I don't see that happening.

Here are the counts for doubles for the Pick 4 Evening draws for the past year:
.
CT 43.3%
.
DE 41.6%
.
FL 43.8%
.
GA 40.3%
.
IL 41.6%
.
IN 44.1%
.
I am not going any further. It is obvious that you are going to lose about 60% of the time

6/16 evening picks (15 states)
Noticed 9 of the 6 states had doubles. That hurts our singles plays. Perhaps we could increase our chances with a little strategy.
How about looking for states that just had doubles..... maybe 2 or 3 in a row. We could just play those states and bet them to flip back to singles the next day. Odds would be more in our favor.
Probabiltiy would be in our favor anyway. Since we would expect to hit on half the states that get single numbers each day..... we could try to rig it in our favo

Sale of Illinois Lottery could start a trend
If Illinois privatizes its lottery system, investors and public officials in other states will closely watch the groundbreaking move with an eye toward repeating it, a gaming industry leader predicted Wednesday.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat running for a second term in November, announced Tuesday a proposal to sell off or lease the state's lottery system to private investors in order to bolster school funding. He said the state could get $10 billion out of the deal and use the money to fu

Illinois Gov. wants to privatize state lottery
Controversial plan is designed to capture funds for education up-front, but is it worth the gamble?
Democratic Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich today will unveil an election-year school funding plan that calls for leasing the state lottery for the next decade to a private firm in return for $10 billion in upfront cash.
Schools would get at least $1 billion a year for the next four years from such a deal, with the remaining $6 billion going into an education trust fund governed by a board

Bonus ball bounced by Lotto Texas
Come Sunday, Lotto Texas players won't have the bonus ball to kick around anymore.
When Saturday night's drawing for Lotto's $32 million jackpot is over, the Texas Lottery Commission will reintroduce the version of the game it abandoned in October 2003. The move came after players sent a clear signal that they do not like having to match the number on that extra ball for a chance to win the grand prize.
How clear was the signal?

13 State Employees to Share $224 Million Powerball Lottery Jackpot
Todd,
I really have to take exception with you characterizing what happened last year with Powerball as a phenomena. I looked at the Powerball website and the reality is this:
In the calandar year of 2005 the jackpot was hit 14 times. (NOTE: That is calandar year and not Powerball fiscal year.)
In the calandar year of 2004 the jackpot was hit 11 times.
In the calandar year of 2003 the jackpot was hit 12 times.
(And please note that due to split jackpots the actual number of winn
