Burnout from constant losses, plain and simple. Assuming it is because they won jackpots is highly optimistic, and unrealistic.

Will we see a $260,000,000 - $300,000,000 Jackpot this year?
I estimate that there is a 75% chance that we won't see such a jackpot this year, at this point. The 25% chance that we will see such a jackpot means it is by no means impossible.
Such jackpots are unusual. Powerball produced one such jackpot early in the year. In the same run (using the inflated PB annuity, it ran to $365M. Megamillions produced two such jackpots this year on separate runs, ending each at $267M and $265M in February and April.

Kansas Powerball lottery winner claims jackpot anonymously
I agree, guesser. The annuity payment is such baloney, since he got less than 1/2 of the jackpot. At least he should have received $7.5 or $8 million. In FL most of the Lotto jackpots are paid at 55% or more, so that would be around $8.2M here. Also, I always read that people take home much more than I calculate. Federal tax can be as high as 35%. I'm not sure if Kansas has a state tax. So I figure after all taxes are paid, he'll really only have between $4 - $4.5M. I agree it's a heck of a

a poll about annuities and lump sum
Mega Millions should advertise their jackpots' cash option values as well, although a few MM state lottery websites do, such as ohiolottery.com .

To MUSL and the Mega group
If the idea is to get bigger jackpots, I don't think it will work at all. It will effectively reduce the expectation value of the game and make more players frustrated. Most players don't think about the expectation value, but they do know that they are continually losing and making the situation worse will probably lead people away from the game.
In any case, the sales value of giant jackpots is not what it used to be. People are getting jaded.
There was a time that $15M was thoug

Playing Lottery in Different states
People that live in neighboring Powerball and Mega Millions states go back and forth constantly, especially when jackpots are up.

Does PB or MM get hit first?
Yep, probably to make up for all those months the jackpots always hit over $100 million.

a poll about annuities and lump sum
LOTTOMIKE, my vote is yes in the future. I hope in the future all jackpots will have cash option only.

Here We Go Again
I have nothing wrong with smaller jackpots. Heck, I play Cash 5 all the time. But when the prize is so much smaller than the odds to win it, then it's a problem. If Pick-6 Lotto over in Jersey got up to $15mil, woo-hoo, I'm going over the river and getting $10 worth. But if Powerball is $15mil, then it's not nearly as appealing. The shorter the odds, the less I expect the jackpots to be. And if a long odds game like Powerball, or more specifically, Mega Millions, can't deliver as $100mil+ jackpo

Whose head will explode if the next 5 MM draws are won?
These events are relatively rare, but certainly they aren't impossible.
It didn't happen this time, but it may in the future. In fact the odds of many sequences in a row of such events are much higher than winning either Powerball or MM. Powerball is going through a string of runs wherein large jackpots always result. This will not happen all the time however. There may be a string wherein Powerball is being won in early drawings and where MM is producing regular large jackpots.
