Wisconsin factory workers win $208M Powerball lottery
chuck32,
Thanks for adding a dose of reality to the discussion. It can be very monotonous to see Cash Only's lop-sided mantra about only taking a cash option , and I completely agree with you that there are also good qualities to taking the annuity. I'll wager that the people who take annuity (with the annually-increasing amount) will love the fact that they get an increase every year.
By the way, will Wisconsin allow the winners to decide independently if they want cash or annuity, or

Mega Millions hit again!
Ouch for Mega Millions. It rolled only to $14 million annuity ($7.8 million cash; only a $1.1 million jump cashwise), which is its smallest roll yet since it went to 5/56 + 1/46. I guess this means Mega hasn't upped its minimum rollover amount when it changed the matrix. Mega's minimum rollover should be at least $3 million. Powerball's current minimum roll is $5 million (approximately $2.2 million cash judging by its current cash to annuity ratio), and its annuity roll from a reset jackpot

What's the cash value on NY Lotto?
No. NY uses a graduated annuity, where payments increase with time. The MM annuity - not that I'd dream of using it - pays out the same amount each year.
Mostly the annuity idea is advertising. Only the cash value matters.
It happens that the MM and PB prizes are roughly the same size, but the advertised values would seem to claim otherwise.

Most corrupt US lottery
OK, but why should MA Megabucks, Lose for Life, Unlucky for Life and various scratch games be annuity-only, thereby shooing away those who would rather collect in lump sum? Maybe in these cases corrupt is not the best word to use; how about conspiracy ? IMO there is money to be made from forcing lottery (and non-gambling; ie Publisher's Clearing House) winners to receive periodic payments instead of allowing them to receive cash. We need to BOYCOTT lottery games that are annuity-only. Lotteri

Mega Millions lottery jackpot increased to $256 million
That's the world record. MM has the US record. If MM rolls this time it might set a new US record, but it would have to go up by about 60 million (annuity value). That might be a stretch, but crossing the 300 mark at all certainly makes peole go crazy.. If it rolls a 2nd time there's a good chance that the cash value could equal or exceed 219. Based on this draw's cash to annuity ratio it would have to reach about 367 million to do that.
Even if it does reach that point I can see some argu

Todd-do you know? (MM in NJ)
From the New Jersey lottery website:
Select how you want to get paid when you buy your ticket - either Annuity or Cash. Select Annuity if you want to be paid the jackpot amount over a 26-year period, or select Cash if you want to be paid the jackpot amount in a lump sum.
From the Ohio lottery website:
The Mega Millions prize is an annuity prize, although players can, at the time of claim, choose the cash option.

Probability of a MegaMillions rollover.
Here is the spreadsheet giving the longterm probabilities. I have updated the data generating the exponential function so as the average data for each drawing number since the change of the matrix. The predictive changes have been small. The first column gives the historical annuity prizes posted on the last large run. The second prize give a calculated annuity prize for putative drawings. You can see that the equation fits better in some areas than in others. The third column gives cash

$500 Million Jackpot!
It also depends on the jackpot size. When you are getting a couple hundred thousand from an annuity on average, will you spend it all on luxuries, or will you skimp for the entire year until your much sought after next check comes in a year? Will that first payment be enough to set everyone up in your family with a house, a car, and other essentials? Or will you only be left with about 10,000 until the next year? You also would not be able to live off the interest of such a low amount, and you w

Probability of a MegaMillions rollover.
I think I want to refine my impression of the probabilities of reaching a new record jackpot, based on the following considerations.Usually long runs are distinguished by a breakout rollover wherein sales, after proceeding in a linear fashion at a slow regular rate of increase, suddenly begin to grow exponentially until a prize is won.Recently, on this run, sales have been performing somewhat erratically, for some reason, but still some semblance of linearity, albeit noisy linearity, has been

Powerball lottery madness spreads to big media
This headline just in: Foot shortened to 6 inches. Handicapped child sets new mile record! Anybody think Guinness or the governing body for official running records would be removing the name of the current record holder? Anybody can claim to set a record, but it's all unsubstantiated hype until it's been verified by an objective party, and compared fairly to any previously accepted record.
