California gas station manager allegedly kept winning lottery scratchers
Kudos for catching the thief too CA! Unfortunately, as far as crooks they come from all race and colors. marigonman You have to go back and read more on the article where the young white clerk who was caught on video who lied to customers out of their winning tickets and pretending it was a losing tickets.. uh huh so check your source before igniting a race thing on lottery page. Crooks are crooks and ignorance is ignorance. Education can change ignorance, crooks are just bad seeds straight from

First winner of big Illinois Lotto jackpot didn't let riches change him
While smallish jackpots, say under a million or so, tend to be of little issue to most winners, anything much larger presents huge risks, as the subject of the article experienced - even relatives and close friends can be threats. Thankfully, lotteries have taken note and are increasingly allowing winners to remain more anonymous than was possible in the past. For example, about a year ago, Pennsylvania stopped publishing winner's full name and city. Winners are identified by first name and i

NJ lottery winners still receiving welfare, food stamps, audit says
This is just nuts. In my state of Mass I'm sure this happens. Why are there not systems in place for every state in the US that has a lottery in place? There needs to be a way to have a computer system automatically see if you are getting Welfare, Food Stamps and Medicaid and if you win a decent amount your benefits should automatically be cut off. There has always been fraud in those programs and it is unfair for tax payers to get stuck with the bill for the people who take advatage of the syst

Kentucky Lottery keeps an eye on frequent winners
Hey Chris! I'm in KY, and to think a smaller WIN of $600 over 4 tickets is under scrutiny??? I thought the smaller wins as u stated did stay under the radar??? Unless he cashes in at Lottery headquarters, which I don't advise... This article is very suspicious! You play to win and that's what Kevin did??? Unbelievable!!! Now I wonder when I cash out who's monitoring my winnings... Not even JACKPOTS just lil nickel and dime plays.... $77K!!! You go boy! That's what I'm talking about, I hope he ge

Audit: Stores buying Michigan lottery tickets from players
A gas station owner on my way to work told me his lottery machine broke down WEEKS ago. Then it was the Satellite . I assumed the MSL replaces broken equipment but he told me they wanted $10K because he broke it. LOL! Now that this article was posted, I wonder if he was one of those retailers. He continues to tell me next week, next week. Well, when I noticed his scratch-offs started to disappear, it all makes sense now. Interesting!

UK lottery winner says he's happier now that the money's gone
+1 I was reading an article interviewing a financial adviser she said top two threats to the winnings were inflation and stupidity. He lost it before inflation could be a factor, that's just sad.

We have 6 Internet Cafes in Ohio
Read the article and you'll see that all your drama is unnecessary. Players can win much more than $10 but can't legally collect more than $10 in cash. The only point I was making, which both of you ignored is why would anybody would take a chance of not getting paid in cash when there are legal casinos in the area. Do you think all those people going to Vegas would go if their winnings were paid off in gas, phone, and gift cards?

"Peeking" is scanning unsold cards to determine winners
The barcodes on the back are not validation barcodes. They are simply a digital representation of the ticket number (usually a long number showing the game number, group number, ticket in the book number, etc), and/or a UPC product code that retailers can scan just like any other product they sell at the register to bring up the price. The validation bar code is usually underneath a scratch area on the front. I don't think we have the whole story in that news article...

'Advance pay' after winning the jackpot?
An account manager from the wealth management department of Wells Fargo was quoted in a news article this year saying that they do provide loans based on a winning lottery ticket. He stated that some of the bigger banks like Bank of America had already been providing those kinds of unusual loans and that Wells Fargo was following suit to fill that niche. They were doing short term loans based on winning lottery tickets, coin, wine and car collections, and other non-traditional forms of collatera

Mathematics and the Lottery
Probability and game theory have been around for a long time. When looking to increase our chances of winning a prize our only options are to find fault with the mechanism used to generate the numbers and/or play smarter. All systems should incorporate one or both of these options. Play as smart as we can and hope for the best using as much math as possible in our search. I enjoyed the article but there are some things which sound similar but really have nothing to do with each
