I'd agree with you if the state lotteries hadn't exaggerated all the annuity based jackpots for years. But they did and were stuck watching a jackpot winner holding an over-sized check with an amount they will never get. Both the cash winners and the annuity winner know how much they took home after taxes. In the last couple of years I've noticed more players are talking about the size of the cash option so not all players rely on the size of the advertised jackpot value.

Thanks for the update. I am on my way out to buy the winning ticket This not really the biggest jackpot ever because the annuity jackpots are inflated by interest rates. I go by the present cash amount. $471 million cash, Mar. 30, 2012 ($656 million annuity) is still the highest. In other words take home is what matters.
