Final jackpot total of $587.5 million will be split 2 ways
How would you react if you won?
By Todd Northrop
The largest Powerball lottery jackpot the world has ever seen has been won Wednesday night by two tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri.
The stage was set for the massive prize early Sunday morning, when lottery officials set the new Powerball lottery jackpot at an estimated $425 million. Over the next few days, extr

Is your state a powerball or a megamillions state
Mega Millions's cash option isn't a higher percentage of the annuity amount than Powerball simply because . The problem people are having when it comes to comparing Powerball's cash option to Mega Millions's cash option, is that they look are looking at the annuity amount first. See, the cash amount is not determined from the annuity amount. It's the other way around. They determine the annuity amount from the cash amount. See, Powerball allows a higher annuity amount with less cash.

Next "Huge" jackpot??
$365 million annuity is the last record capped Powerball jackpot. So the next time Powerball goes on a record run the cap will not go into effect until it reaches $390 million annuity. If that jackpot rolls then the next drawing will only go to $415 million annuity with the rest going to the match 5 bonus prize pool. If the jackpot is hit at $390 million annuity though the next record run would not be capped until $415 million annuity.-weshar75

Canada/annuity jackpots
One of the biggest differences between Canadian and US lotteries is that Canadian jackpot games have always been annuity-free (jackpots automatically are paid in lump sum.) Canadian lotteries are trying annuity games on a very limited basis. Do you eventually see Canadian jackpot games switching to annuity-based jackpots (I'm sure cash option would be available).

MegaMillions Annuity Payout Schedule
Does anyone know the annuity payout schedule for MegaMillions? For example, if the JP is $26 million, does the annuity pay $1 million gross for 26 years, or is it a graduated scale (e.g., 2.5% of the JP the first year and increasing to 5.1% in the 26th year)? The USA Mega site seems to indicate that MegaMillions pays the same amount for 26 years. CA SuperLotto Plus pays the annuity on the graduated scale.I am a lump sum player myself, but I am just curious about this.

Mega Millions vs Ohio 6/49
Todd, I've mentioned before that it's not so much the longer annuity period in Ohio Lotto (30 payments) than in MM (26) but the fact that the Ohio Lottery makes TWO calculations of the annuity; one to determine the actual cash value of the annuity, and one to determine what is PAID to the winner(s). Different percentage rates are used (unless it has changed, the %ages differ by 1 1/2 points; ie, 4.25% might be used to compute the actual retail

TX winner a potential loser
Freddy: Todd, myself, and others have pointed out various pitfalls involving annuity payments. Most lotto games pay the annuity in 25, 26, or 30 annual payments (Powerball's new format, coming next month, includes a change in the annuity, from 26 to 30 installments.) Several games, including California SuperLotto Plus, pay the annuity so that the smallest payments are at the beginning. CA SL+ and some other games still require the choice to be made when you PLAY instead of after you win. And, th

Can one spouse take lump while the other takes an annuity?
I was responding to Tucker's suggestion that you take lump sum (and pay max taxes on EVERYTHING), then (with a lesser amount) you buy an annuity. So he is going to buy his on annuity with 40% less starting money (of half the winnings). On top of that, the lump sum BEFORE TAXES is about 55-60% of the list prize amount. Very hard to get annuity that gets a better rate then 40%+ to make up the 40%+ loss you started with.
Most places allow you to split the winning on the ticket BEFORE you cash i
