Players cross the border for Powerball
Quote: Originally posted by qutgnt on October 09, 2004 you only should play when the jackpots are high, use all your bullets for jackpots that have the best dollar to odds ratio. its just smart playing. when you chase 165 million to one odds you want to be paid that god forbid you hit it. but your a lot smarter playing take fives and such with a lot shorter odds where if you blow 500 bucks when the jackpot is say 500K at least your cutting your odds down to about 1000 to one. and many people hav

Dumb question of the day
my last paragraph is straightforward.... powerball is 2 games, a 5 of 53 and then a 1 of 42... by buying 42 tickets, each with a diffferent powerball number, you have beat the second of 2 games... but not at a cost-effective return... ($3 for a $42 investment)what I am trying to say is that you have no control over the possible outcomes, nothing you can do will change th fact that 1,000 possibilities exist for the pick 3... you only have control of the number of FAVORABLE outcomes...by buying mo

Probability of a rollover in PB and MM
Well, for the odds of winning just $2, the reason it's not 1 in 52 is because you also have to figure the odds that you will NOT match any of the white balls. You use the following formula: The numerator for figuring the odds of matching X number of white balls is always: (52*51*50*49*48) / 120 = 2,598,960 In other words, there are 2,598,960 possible combinations of the first five white balls. The odds that you will match X number of white balls is as follows: 2,598,960 / ((120/(X! * (5-

Buying more tickets = reduced odds
AyenowitallI agree with those who have wondered about the comprehension skills of some members. (I have to be true to my honesty and say that in a face to face situation I would just walk away as I have always held the view that you cannot have a worthwhile arguement with a stupid person.) Far be from me to call anyone stupid here. Some little exercises I have done were to produce biased histories and see how they fared. So for the 6/49 example I gave above it means that for every 49 Draws each

Anybody playing NJ lottery here?
I concentrate on the Pick-3 because it's the best game our lotteries offer, pay-out to odds-ratio, and only 1000 to one for a jackpot . You get 50% of the payout-to-odds with the pick 3 and 4 games. Your payoff-to-odds ratio go down condiderably with the jackpot games and are a joke at the scratch-off level. Check the back of your tickets or bet slips to see the odds for these games.Example: IL Little Lotto gives you $5 for matching 3 out of 5 numbers (in a 5/30 game), but the odds are abou

1 winner in mega for 150 in georgia
Although a $400 million jackpot would be fun and interesting , why does anyone on here - who I am quite sure have never hit the astronomical 135 million to 1 jackpot odds - think they have to make the odds even more astronomical? Is it because you are concerned with the states not making enough money, or because a jackpot of $100-150 million somehow isn't enough? I don't get it. Okay, I admit it does seem strange that the jackpots have been won so often after they increased the odds (wasn't

Odds and Quick Picks
The recent discussions concerning quick picks made me a bit courious to find some historical fact I might be able to comment on.Now bear with me my observations are limited to the Take 5 (5# draw game) in New York which is where I concentrate my efforts.I usually pick my own numbers to play, but will buy a Quick pick occasionally. Of a total of (62) Quick picks in this sample, (38) 61.3% had mixed numbers, (18) 29% had 2-consecutive #'s, and (6) 9.7% were with either two sets of 2-consecutive #

Powerball and Mega Millions Odds
To Driftwood,The odds are calculated by dividing the all the possile winning combinations by all the possible combinations. For example in Powerball there are 120,526,770 possible combinations and only one combination with 5 winning numbers and the powerball for the jackpot ,so the odds of winning the jackpot is 1:120,526,770 and for 5 winning numbers and no powerball, there are 41 combinations left or 41:120,526,770 = ~1:2,939,677 and etc. To get the odds for the rest of the combinations ,y

Kansas Pick 3 simulation
The purpose of this simulation is to test Aquarius Pick 3 lottery system in a real-life like situation. It is a simulation because no real money is played or won.
The purpose of the simulation is to establish procedures that facilitate consistent winning in Pick 3 lottery, identify system's strengths and weaknesses, and introduce improvements, if possible, in its peformance.
I'm unable to test the system in real life because there is no Pick 3 lottery in British Columbia. Other Pick 3 lott
