How to get a winning ticket everytime...
Probably all states market them this way. As the article said, if they didn't, people would get too few winners and stop playing.
The inherent problem with playing this way though is.....okay, you can't go 15 tickets without a winner. But what if the winner was the last ticket sold before you got there, and the next one was 15 tickets down? You buy the 15 tickets and get one winner. And unless its a biggie, you don't cover your cost, and you lose.

Unemployed N.Y. Man Wins $14 Million Lottery
I thing the last part of your post is unfair. He did just lose his job. He may have had to go into credit card debt to feed his family. :(
Correct me if i'm wrong but I think the article also said he had an advisor and lawyer teamed up already. Sounds like he has a decent head on his shoulders. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to take an annuity.

Unemployed N.Y. Man Wins $14 Million Lottery
I believe this was mentioned in the news article.
He had opted to take a lump sum, which means that after taxes he will receive $5,052,675.

Stolen lottery ticket wins suspect a trip to jail
Badger, that wasn't my point. Nobody should steal. I was only responding to the question about the 30 day sentence. I definitely believe in putting rapists, murderers, child molesters, animal abusers, arsonists and all violent offenders away. I also think people who steal need to pay their dues. But putting someone who commits a petty crime in prison for a long time with hardened criminals has never proven to deter crime or help society. 30 days isn't very long, but maybe it's his first offense.

$10M lottery winner squanders fortune
He looks so happy in the photo. The article indicates he's divorced, but doesn't mention what happened to his wife children, except that he gave some money to his 2 sons. I wonder if he got get divorced before or after he won the money?
Well, it was his money to blow I guess. Sad story, although he does sound like a miserable human being, according to his neighbors.

A promise is a promise
You don't think people should keep the promises they make?
The people to whom he made this promise (the article in the news forum actually says that he plans to give them each a share) were people with whom he routinely played in a pool. He certainly isn't required to give them anything, but that he is offering shares to them from a prize won with a ticket bought independently is a nice and honorable gesture. Despite the conjecture of some people here there doesn't appear to be any indication

Tn RNG Drawing 077 multiple times.
Maybe the math professor didn't make a mistake. Without being there we have no way of knowing what the professor actually said, or what they were asked. The odds of 077 being drawn 3 times in a row are 1 in 1 billion. Of course the odds of any 3 drawings having the results they actually had are also 1 in 1 billion. The article in the ness forum quotes a professor as saying the ods of the same combination (not permutation) occurring in 3 of 4 drawings is less than 1 in 10,000, but what actually h

Privatization of Texas lottery may get 2nd look in 2009
The article is interesting, but like almost every other article I've seen on this topic, short on details and loaded up with not-necessarily-true assumptions.
Lantern - did you know that the Legislature dropped payouts in TX some years back? They made the unfounded assumption that the Lottery is a zero-sum game and if you lower payouts, those dollars will simply flow though to profits. They lost several hundred million in profits before they PARTIALLY restored payouts in TX - but they st

David kills Goliath in Michigan will keep promise to friends!
No, he is not 135 million richer than a week ago. The 135 million was the advertised jackpot, spread over 26 years. According to one news article, if he chooses the cash option, which most people do, that will be $84.1 million, or $62.7 million after taxes. But even that is inaccurate. The $62.7 million is after withholding, not after his actual taxes. His actual amount after federal taxes will likely be less than $55 million. I don't know what his state taxes would be, but no doubt the state wo

Tenn. lawmakers want to force lottery to drop computer draws
This article is a little scary. It makes me feel bad that the elected officials cant work together to solve this matter. Jason Mumpower is on the right tract. Gov. Phil Bredesen should realize it's the people who play the lottery and they should have had a say so in the mater. The lawmakers agreed to a lottery and now he doesn't want them to be a part of reorganizing the lottery drawings. The people depend on the lawmakers to make decisions for them when they do not have a direct say so in the m
